“This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in local government,” said Lynn Johnson, Parks and Recreation Director. “We value the unique perspective that students bring to this important advisory board.”
This 16-member volunteer board advises the Parks and Recreation Department, the Mayor and the City Council on matters relating to parks and recreation facilities and programs. The two student members serve one-year terms, and students may serve more than one term. Service on the board can be used to satisfy community involvement hours. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets at 4 p.m. the second Thursday of every month. Student members also have the opportunity to participate on one of the board’s working committees.

, Nebraska’s oldest liberal arts and sciences college changed its name from Doane College to Doane University
. At the same time Doane also announced a change in its university structure that will result in the formation of Doane’s College of Education
. The addition of the new college will create a university structure that is defined in three colleges; the College of Arts & Sciences
(the traditional, residential campus in Crete), College of Professional Studies
(adult undergraduate, Master of Arts in Counseling and Master of Arts in Management programs in Lincoln, Omaha and Grand Island) and the newly developed College of Education.
Next year Doane’s College of Arts & Sciences will join more than 800 colleges and universities nationwide who offer Test-Optional Admission. Doane University believes there are instances in which a standardized test does not accurately represent a student’s academic preparedness for college. To this end, it will be prepared to provide an alternative admission path not requiring an ACT or SAT score. More information will be available early next fall.
