Español I Course Description

Spanish 1 is the beginning of an ongoing language program.  It is designed to guide students through the initial stages of learning a language.  This includes fundamentals like greeting someone, foods, and the alphabet.  Similar to many other subject areas, each unit’s skills depend heavily upon the previous set; therefore it is imperative that student keep up with work.

The textbook used in the class is ¡Avancemos! Level 1. We will study Units 1-5 and part of Unit 6.  The ¡Avancemos! text is online and students will receive a log-in password so that they may access the text at home.  Additional practice activities are available at ClassZone.com.  (See the Internet Resources page for the direct link.)

Each unit contains two sections called “Lecciones.”  At the end of each Lección is a vocabulary page which contains the key vocabulary words and phrases which must be learned in order to be successful in the class.  Students should study this vocabulary every night.

We will cover a Lección every 2 -3 weeks. At the end of each Lección we will have a test.  Tests will have listening, reading, writing and culture sections. Throughout the Lección, we will also have periodic quizzes over vocabulary and grammar concepts presented.  Other types of assessment such as oral performance assessments and projects will also be utilized. A final exam will be given at the end of each semester.

Español III Course Description

Spanish 3 is the third year of a continuing language program. It builds upon the skills learned in Spanish 1 and 2. While learning new vocabulary and phrases in Spanish 3 we will also be incorporating a review of the material learned in Spanish 1 and 2.

The textbook used in the class is Avancemos Level 3. We will cover Units 1-4. along with the Preliminay unit which is a review chapter designed to help students feel comfortable with their Spanish from the first 2 years.

Each unit contains 2 sections called Lecciónes.   At the end of each lesson is a vocabulary page which contains the key vocabulary words and phrases which must be learned to be successful in the class.  Students should study this vocabulary every night.

We will cover a lesson in about 3-4 weeks (depending on testing schedules during the spring semester, there may be a couple shorter chapters).   We will have vocabulary and/or grammar quizzes during the lesson and a major test at the end of each lesson.   The tests will include listening, reading, writing and culture sections.  Other types of assessments, such as oral performance assessments and projects, will be utilized as well.
