College Vocabulary Terms

Public/Private:  Public schools get money from the government.  Private schools don’t.  Public is usually cheaper.

Faculty:  professors/teachers

Student-Faculty Ratio:  compares the number of students and faculty.  20:1 means that for every 20 students there is 1 professor

GED:  A Graduation Equivalency Diploma is equal to a high school diploma.

International Baccalaureate: high school degree for completing a program of advanced placement classes.  In Lincoln, this degree is available only at Lincoln High School.

Interview: some schools require a face-to-face interview with an applicant before they are accepted

Letter of Recommendation: Letter to the college about why they should accept you, written by an adult friend or teacher

Entrance Exams:  Usually either the SAT and ACT are required before you apply.  Both tests cost a lot of money to take, so you want to be prepared.

GPA:  Grade Point Average, 4.0 = all A+

SAT: Scholastic Aptitude Test- test that many schools require before you apply.  Perfect score is 2400.

SAT Critical Reading Mean Score:  Reading part of the SAT.  Perfect score is 800.

SAT Math Mean Score: Math part of the SAT.  Perfect score is 800.

ACT Mean Score:  Perfect score is 36.

Tuition:  Amount you have to pay for classes

Fees:  includes using the library, gym or wellness center, or other facilities

Books:  Average amount you would probably have to spend on textbooks

Room/Board:  Amount you would have to pay for on-campus housing

Intramural Sports:  non-competitive sports teams you can join
