Strategies & Helpful Hints

Writing a History Essay
Writing a strong historical essay can be difficult if you haven’t trained yourself to support your arguments with significant evidence. Read the following attachment to learn more information about how to write a strong historical essay: HowToWriteAHistoryEssay

Strategic Reading
Remember that often times our readings can seem long and dense, but you shouldn’t fret over what kinds of material you should and shouldn’t remember. Follow the strategy discussed in class if you’re having trouble with how to accomplish that task.

  • TopicWhat is the broad idea? What is the passage, section or document about?
  • ScopeWhat are the specific details that help support the topic?
  • PurposeWhy did the author write this?

In addition to writing down the topic, scope and purpose of your readings consider the following:

  • Main ideas of each paragraph
  • Any opinion(s) offered – whose opinion and what is it?
  • Definitions of specialized terms that are central to the main idea
  • Key examples

–> Fun fact: I actually drew these ideas from studying for the GRE so if graduate school is in your future you can thank me later ;).

Citations
For this class we will be using the Chicago style citation format. The following website has great information about what that looks like in case you were unfamiliar. Click here.
