Weekly Update 9/23-9/27

This week we began our Tree Study! We have been talking all about what we already know about trees and taking time to explore and talk about the trees around Kloefkorn. If you have any tree parts that you would like to donate, please bring them in! We are looking for tree cookies (cross sections of trees to examine rings), big or unusual leaves, seed pods, tree roots, etc.

In small groups this week the students practiced number identification and counting, measuring and comparing, and sequencing by size.

Our social emotional curriculum talked about how to use self-talk to follow directions in the classroom and at home. We practiced this skill all week!

Weekly Update 9/16-9/20

This week we wrapped up our Beginning of the Year Study by talking about how to make friends at school. We practiced taking turns, talked about who our friends are, and talked about what we like to do with friends both at school and at home.

In small groups this week we practiced our recall skills by playing memory, practiced our writing skills but writing letters and names in our journals, and worked on predicting by trying to guess how many times a ball would bounce. Writing is a fundamental skill that can be practiced from a very young age. Having your child begin by tracing letters with their fingers is a great place to start. When we are writing, we use the words, “Pinch and flip” in order to encourage the correct pencil grasp. This is a technique that most children are familiar with, and I am happy to demonstrate what it looks like on a home visit!

Our social emotional curriculum focused on practicing self-talk and talking about our solution kit. Our solution kit has problem solving ideas for social problems. The ideas are paired with visuals so that children can use it in the classroom independently.

Weekly Update 9/9-9/13

This week we finished our discussion about when things happen at school and began talking about who works at our school. We had two classroom visitors come talk about how they help at our school. Mr Craig talked to us about how he cleans the school and what materials he uses and Ms Rachel talked to us about how she helps friends who are hurt or sick and showed us some tools that she uses.

In small groups this week, students practiced making shapes with geoboards, moved their bodies in different ways on the playground, and played a letter game. We are working hard to learn our letters and letter sounds in preschool! We practice a few letters each week and each letter has a picture and an action that we do. Ask your child if they can show/tell you any of the pictures or actions for the letters H, T, L, or E.

Our social emotional curriculum talked about how to use friendship skills in the classroom. We practiced how to get your friends attention, how to give a toy, and how to ask for a toy. We also talked about fair ways to play in the classroom.

Weekly Update 9/3-9/6

This week we finished talking about our rules at school and began talking about when things happen at school. We learned about how to appropriately play rhythm sticks, what resting position looks like, and we talked about the function of a clock.

During small groups this week the students used team work to complete a floor puzzle, worked on following directions using playdoh and cookie cutters, and learned about spatial relationships with beanbags by naming where their beanbag landed in relation to a basket. These words can be incorporated at home in your daily routines! For example, asking your child to put their toothpaste beside their toothbrush or telling them to put their toy behind the couch.

Our social emotional curriculum talked about how to pay attention and focus using atten-to-scopes (ask your child to show you their atten-to-scopes!) and how to appropriately get someones attention in the classroom.
