Gears

Online applications have a number of hurdles to overcome before they become complete and total replacements for the day-to-day applications we use. I believe the first one was firmly leapt today with Google Gears.

  • Google Gears
Gears is an an open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality so that you can store application resources and data locally in a fully-searchable relational database and improve application responsiveness.

What really gets my attention is that Google is not traveling this road alone. Google says “We are working with Adobe, Mozilla and Opera and other industry partners to make sure that Gears is the right solution for everyone.”

Primitive? Yes. Beta? Definately. Am I installing it? Youbetcha.

Is it just me or are we square in the middle of the Internet Renaissance? Keep looking up – you never know which app will be the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
