Math Procedures

1.  Warm Up

There will always be a few short math problems from both current and past material on the board.  A daily warm-up worksheet will be given out to each student at the start of every week and should be used to complete the warm-up problems.  The warm-up problems are to be started as soon as you are seated, which should be done before the bell rings.  The warm ups will be counted as part of your “Work/Study Habits” grade and I will check them for completion at the end of every week.

2.  Math Folder and Notebook

Daily notes are to be taken in a spiral notebook. Notes consist of vocabulary and examples of the days work which will be helpful when doing homework. Handouts, grades quizzes, and worksheets should be kept in a folder designated for math class.

3.  Daily Practice

Please complete ALL math assignments from the textbook on LOOSE LEAF paper as these assignments will be turned in daily and all work must be shown to receive credit.  Math practice (homework) will be given almost everyday and will be due the next day.  This work is a very important step in being successful and will help reinforce the concepts that are taught in class.  I will never assign any unnecessary work.

4.  Tests and Quizzes

Tests are at the end of each chapter and there will be a couple of quizzes throughout the course of a chapter.  Quizzes will be announced.  A chapter test grade will not be entered as one grade, instead it will be scored based on the “Big Ideas” that make up the chapter.  Retesting will be offered on individual “Big Ideas” on the next chapter test.

5.  Grading

Grades will be determined by the scores earned from the “Big Ideas” along with scores that were improved by retesting.  Grades will always be available in Pinnacle and I strongly encourage both students and parents to check Pinnacle often.  Besides assessment grades students will also be receiving a Work/Study Habits grade and a Social Behavior grade.

6.  Make Up Work

Students that are absent will need to check with me when they return to school.  I have too many students to keep track of who was gone on what days, so it is your responsibility to check in with me.  You will have 2 days per day absent to make up any work missed.  Tests and quizzes, however, may not adhere to this rule.

7.  Getting Extra Help

The math department offers a Math Lab on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 to 3:45pm.  The Math Lab is staffed by all of the Irving math teachers on a rotation and I encourage students to use this resource if they have questions.  I will also be available to help students and that can be arranged as needed either before or after school.
