Homework

Math

Students will have daily homework assignments practicing the concepts taught that day as well as reviewing concepts to ensure retention of skills.

Spelling

Students will have weekly spelling lists which include phonetic and high frequency words.

Reading

Students will bring familiar guided reading books home to read for fluency practice. Research shows that rereading familiar text promotes and develops strong reading skills. First Grade High Frequency Word lists by Unit

Reading Tips

It can be hard to find just the right book level when you are at the library, so here is a link to a leveled booklist for DRA levels 1-18.

Higher-level books can be found here

You can also check the level of a book by typing the title into the Book Wizard at this website. There is even a Book Wizard app for your phone! You can scan the barcode on the back of a book and it will pop up information all about the book!!!

You can also download the Overdrive App to phones, tablets and e-readers and connect it to the Lincoln City Libraries where you can “check out” thousands of digital children’s books for FREE right from the comfort of your own home (and you don’t have to worry about late fees!)

Using an app called Epic!, you can read thousands of digital children’s books grouped by age. You get unlimited books for $4.99 a month, but the first month is free.

Don’t forget the power of reading TO your child. Children need to hear and understand complex language and vocabulary before they are able to read it on their own. Most importantly, this will further develop a love of reading as they connect it to special time spent with you!
