4th Grade Figure Sculptures

The 4th grade has been working on figure sculptures and are nearing the end of the process. Students started with gesture drawings, bent wire to make a figure in action, gave it form with tinfoil, covered the figure in papier mache, and painted the surface with acrylic paints. The figures will be installed in the library and on display after spring break and into April. Stop by the library and enjoy the figures in action! Excellent work 4th grade.

5th Grade Banner Circles

The 5th grade classes practiced using tints, tones and shades of red to experiment with the potential of acrylic paints on vinyl circles to be included on the 2012 Lakeview Art Banner.

Circles were selected for inclusion on the banner and affixed with an adhesive to the standard vinyl banner that the students had already painted cream and trimmed with a black paint border.

The final step was to seal the circles with an acrylic varnish.

2012 Art in the Round Banner

Our title, “Art in the Round” was added as the finishing touch. Each student in both 5th grade classes had opportunity to contribute to the success of this year’s banner. Nice work!

Many of the elementary schools in Lincoln Public Schools participated in the annual traveling display of banners that can be seen around Lincoln for the next year in such places as the Childrens Museum. If you have a chance, check them out!

The following gallery includes more detail pictures of student work as well as some of the group work done on this project. It was a delight to work with this group of students.

1st Grade Proportional Portrait Practice Drawings

The first grade class is studying how to draw a person’s face using proportion and measurements. Students discussed the various shapes they see in a face as well as relative sizes and positions of these features. You will notice guidelines in the drawings that helped students position features on the face.

This exercise in proportion and looking at the details in a human face are in preparation for self-portrait collages they will be starting soon using construction paper. Please enjoy a few examples from Ms. Clark’s class.

5th Grade Paintings for the Banner: Tints, Tones and Shades

The 5th grade has been busy for several weeks working on this year’s art banner that will travel around the city. In keeping with our theme, Art in the Round, we have been making individual compositions in acrylic paint on circles that will be included on the banner. Students are studying tints, tones and shades so are working with a limited palette of colors: white, black and red.

white + color = tint

gray + color = tone

black + color = shade

They are experimenting with mixing their own paints as they work in their own styles. It will be exciting to see everyone’s work combined on the banner. Please enjoy the gallery of individual paintings from both Mr. Schwanke and Ms. Golden’s classes.

3rd Grade: Drawing Facial Expressions from Observation

The 3rd grade artists finished their proportional, self-portraits and have moved onto how emotion is expressed on the face. In preparation for exaggeration masks, students have been taking turns posing and drawing each other expressing an emotion on their faces. These studies will translate into exaggerations and paper mache masks in weeks to come.

I was interested in the variety within the early sketches. Here is a small sample from Ms. Adams’ class.

Kindergarten Collages: Fun with Scissors and Glue

After practice and discussion of how to properly hold, transport and use scissors, the kindergarten artists began work on self-directed collages. They chose background paper and added shapes and patterns based on their own design. The use of glue bottles is also not something to be taken for granted as this requires a certain amount of strength, control and care.

The results of our explorations were varied and charming. Here are a few examples from Ms. Kruse’s class. Enjoy!

2nd Grade Mixes Primary Colors and Experiments with Paint

The second grade artists studied relationships between colors on the color wheel and how to mix their own colors. Using only the 3 primary colors (yellow, red, blue), students discovered many different colors as they tried mixing different combinations. The artists used dry cakes of tempera paint and mixed their own paints by adding water. They controlled the thickness of their paint by adding more or less water with their brushes and stirring. Any color other than red, yellow and blue was created by the artist. Some of the paintings in this gallery are made entirely out of invented colors. Nice job 2nd grade!

3rd Grade Self-Portraits

After studying the self-portrait work of Frida Kahlo, 3rd grade artists created self-portraits of their own using mirrors and proportional lines and measurements to make accurate faces. They created symbolic self-portraits on the frames around their faces including words and pictures of people, places and things that are important to them in their lives. This was a challenging project but the results were worth it. Nice job 3rd grade!

5th Grade Brainstorms Ideas for 2012 Banner

Lakeview Elementary is participating in the exhibition of art banners created by students that will be exhibited all across Lincoln. Everyone in the 5th grade classes will participate in the creative process to generate ideas as well as construct this year’s banner. Our title is Art in the Round. Each student contributed at least 2 banner designs and the final project will be a compilation of the ideas from both Mr. Schwanke and Ms. Golden’s classes. It is the best of everyone’s ideas. Stay tuned as the vision comes into focus.

4th Grade Figure Sculptures are Fabulous.

The 4th grade artists have been working on gesture drawings that are being used as the maps for figure sculptures. We started with wire armatures (skeleton), added tinfoil muscles and are working on the paper mache skins. The figure sculptures will be painted in metallic paints and on display as a group later in the quarter. Stay tuned for more photos and updates.
