What are we studying this quarter?

English 8

English 8 classes will be studying the Holocaust for the remainder of the year. We started the unit with an awesome performance by the Haymarket Theatre Company of “Anne and Emmett.” We will begin the novel Island on Bird Street which focuses on a young boy who must survive alone in the abandoned ghetto for 5 months while he waits for his father to return from a concentration camp. We will also introduce many other readings and activities that cover different the topics of intolerance, resistance, and hatred. Students will end the unit with a research project and class presentation.

NeSA-R assessments will be given the week of March 24. YEAH!!! the last of state and district assessments. Students will also have 4 weeks of spelling lessons and tests. Please encourage your child to study for the tests.

English 8D

English 8D classes will also be studying the Holocaust but with a little different focus. We will read the novel Night by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. It focuses on his time at Auschwitz and how is changed him and is the basis for his work on ending hatred, indifference, and intolerance. Students will have several writing assignments during the unit where they will have to show what they’ve learned and how the materials are still important in today’s world. They will have a research project to complete and a class presentation to give as their last assignment.

NeSA-R assessments will be given the week of March 24. YEAH!!! the last of state and district assessments. Students will also have 3 weeks of spelling lessons and 3 weeks of Greek/Latin.  Please encourage your child to study for the tests.
