Sociology D Research Project

Taking on the responsibility of becoming a sociologist.  This is the application and experiential side of doing sociology.  Students will be empowered to take ownership of researching a sociological issue.

Start Here…Need a Topic?  Research Sample Topics

Starting with the end in mind:  At the end of your research experiences ALL students will complete…

  1. Document Based Question and Excerpts (DBQ).
  2. Document Based Question and Response (DBQR)
  3. Annotated Bibliography
  4. Presentation

Document Based Question and Response (DBQR): Students will select a topic to research and gather sources/information to answer a focus question regarding sociology.  Students will use a 6 step process to complete this task.

  1. Identify a Question:  Example…Does women’s participation in traditionally male sports increase or decrease the likelihood of them being targets of sexual harassment in high school or on college campuses?
  2. Obtaining Documents
  3. Labeling Documents
  4. Referencing Documents
  5. Question and Response Format
  6. Annotated Bibliography: EXAMPLE

Presentation: Students will use the sources from the DBQR to put together a presentation of their findings.

Address the following questions through your VISUAL AID/INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY:

  1. What impact does (or did, if you’re researching a past event) your topic have on society in the U.S. (or in the world)?

-By making this connection, you are applying the concepts of sociology to your specific topic. This is an important connection to make so that it is obvious to me that you understand how/why your chosen topic is important and applicable to the study of sociology.

-Write OBJECTIVELY (relating information in an impersonal manner without feelings or opinions).

 

  1. Who is affected/influenced by this issue?

-Cite specific social classes, gender, races, age groups, regions of the world, etc.

-Be sure to include all viewpoints/perspectives of the issue and provide balanced information

 

  1. How do each of the three major Sociological Perspectives view your topic and your topic’s impact on society?

-Include how the Functionalist, Conflict & Symbolic Interactionist Perspectives view your topic.

 

  1. Why is this a significant issue in society today (or if you’re researching a past event, why was it significant in the past)?
