Sociology Course Overview: 

Getting Started with “A Moment of Inspiration”…

  • As you watch the video think about a moment of inspiration…
  • What is your moment if inspiration?  Where were you?  What were you doing?  Who was there?  How old were you?  How did it change you?  Was the moment positive or negative?

Are you a Millennial? Introductory Unit:

Start with the end in mind.  Students will answer the focus question by providing at least 5 reasons/perspectives as evidence.  Students will be sure to identify the source using parentheses.  Example (Scott Hess-Millennials: Who they are, and why we hate them).

  • Define Millennial
  • Identify characteristics of Millennials
  • Identify how Millennials have been labeled
  • What facts support Millennial labels?
  • What justification can you provide for the facts?
  • How can the label be modified?
  • Do you agree with the label?  How would you support your answer?
  • Create an alternative definition/label and defend it.

Norms Project: Norms are such a pervasive feature of everyday life that we often cannot recognize or analyze them.  This assignment will have us examine norms and sanctions at work in our culture.  To complete this assignment, you will be in groups of 2-4.  Each group will commit a norm violation.  Project details are included in the following documents.  All students must contribute to their group.  Each individual student will hand in their own journal.
