Instrument Inspection…

We will have an instrument/equipment inspection each quarter. This is not meant to trip up students, but to monitor the condition of the instruments. If your instrument is clean and in good working condition, this will be an easy 100 points for students. Here’s what I will be looking for:

All instrument lockers or storage areas are to be kept neat and free from trash.

Flutes
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints in good working condition
2. Cleaning rod
3. Soft cleaning cloth
4. Inside of case clean
5. Name clearly identified on outside of case
6. Pencil

Oboes/Bassoons
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints in good working condition, including tendon corks
2. Swab / cleaning feather
3. Extra reed
4. Inside of case clean
5. Cork Grease
6. Name clearly identified on outside of case
7. Pencil

Clarinets
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints in good working condition, including tendon corks
2. Clean mouthpiece
3. Swab or pad saver
4. Two extra reeds with a reed holder of some type
5. Cork Grease
6. Inside of case clean
7. Name clearly marked on the outside of case
8. Pencil

Saxophones
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints in good working condition, including pads and corks
2. Clean mouthpiece
3. Neck strap
4. Swab or pad saver
5. Two extra reeds with a reed holder of some type
6. Cork Grease
7. Inside of case clean
8. Name clearly marked on the outside of case
9. Octave key cap
10. Pencil

Trumpets (cornets)/ Baritones
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints and in good working condition
2. Mouthpiece clean and round at receiver end
3. Cleaning / polishing cloth
4. Valve oil / slide grease
5. All valves and slides in good working condition, 3rd valve ring for trumpets
6. Cleaning snake / mouthpiece brush
7. Straight mute (trumpets / cornets only)
8. Inside of case clean
9. Name clearly marked on the outside of case
10. Pencil

Horns
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints and in good working condition
2. Mouthpiece clean and round at receiver end
3. Cleaning / polishing cloth
4. Rotor oil / Slide grease
5. All rotors and slides in good working condition
6. Cleaning snake / mouthpiece brush
7. Inside of case clean
8. Name clearly marked on the outside of case
9. Pencil

Trombones
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints with main slide clean and in good working condition
2. Mouthpiece clean and round at receiver end
3. Cleaning / polishing cloth
4. Slide oil / slide grease
5. All tuning slides in good working condition
6. Cleaning snake / mouthpiece brush
7. Inside of case clean
8. Name clearly marked on the outside of case
9. Pencil

Tubas
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints with tuning slides clean and in good working condition
2. Mouthpiece clean and round at receiver end
3. Cleaning / polishing cloth
4. Valve oil / slide grease
5. All tuning slides in good working condition
6. Inside of case clean
7. Cleaning snake / mouthpiece brush
8. Pencil

Percussion
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints with snare mechanism in good working condition
2. Sturdy stand that holds instrument at proper playing height
3. Snare head and batter head clean with no damage
4. Matched pair of sticks with initials engraved
5. Drum key
6. Practice pad with name clearly identified
7. Name clearly marked on the outside of case

All Strings
1. Instrument clean and free of fingerprints and excess rosin
2. Bow clean with no cracks in frog or stick (screw working properly)
3. Cleaning / polishing cloth
4. Rosin
5. Shoulder rest for violins & violas; End pin rests for cellos & basses
6. Mute – all strings
7. Inside of case clean
8. Name clearly marked on the outside of case
9. Pencil
