Teaching, Learning, Caring to Create Responsible, Productive Citizens
In 2012-2013 we are focusing on cultivating:
This school year, Amy Cosson has joined the Prescott Staff as Assistant Principal. In addition, we welcome a number of other new staff members who will make a positive contribution to our students’ learning. Our school age students are comprised of four kindergarten sections, four first grade sections, four second grade sections, four third grade sections, three fourth grade and three fifth grade classrooms.
At Prescott School, we provide a safe, orderly, respectful environment, that promotes high levels of student engagement and performance. We teach the social skills for “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible” with two guiding principles for acceptable behavior: first, it is never okay to be hurtful; ad second, it is never okay to be disruptive. We strive to implement common expectations across the school beginning with before school childcare, throughout the day, and ending with after school clubs, activities and childcare.
Prescott families, staff and community have collaborated to build and provide an Outdoor Classroom on Prescott Park, our playground. A walking path was installed in the spring of 2010 along with a rain garden, followed by a bridge, park benches, plantings, raised vegetable beds, designated learning areas and an arbor throughout the 2011-12 school year. Summer of 2012 we added a stage built as an Eagle Scout project and plans for a gazebo are in the making. This school year, teachers will be providing Prescott students at all grades several opportunities each quarter to participate in outdoor learning.
This year we are focusing on cultivating. Our goal is that through the engagement of families, teachers, and students many rich things will be cultivated within the the Prescott community. This “cultivation” began over the summer with a community project to create an artistic tree that will stand in the front hall of the school and remind us of this shared goal. Students and families began its creation during the Prescott Summer Festival when they used natural materials to collectively cover the tree in artistic designs. Then, teachers joined in the partnership by decorating the other side of the cultivation tree during a morning of staff development focused on our outdoor classroom. Next time you walk into Prescott school stop by the front desk and take a moment to admire what the Prescott students, families, and staff cultivated together!
Prescott is an urban pre-K through Grade 5 elementary school located in the Near South neighborhood of Lincoln, Nebraska. Prescott has been the center site for educating elementary age deaf and hard of hearing students since 1927. Prescott staff and students were located at the Abbott Sports Complex for the 2006-2007 school year while Indoor Air Quality and other renovation work was done to the building. Students and staff returned to the building for the 2007-08 school year.
In addition to the , K-5 school age students, Prescott houses three Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) ExCITE Integrated classes, one class of Early Childhood Hearing Impaired Program and one class of Early Childhood Bilingual Program. Prescott is a community school working in conjunction with Family Service to provide a before and after school program, “Pride Club”, as well as after school club offerings. Our students receive Computer, Art, Music, and P.E. instruction during daily specialist time. The specialists provide additional experiences during Expressive Arts Days on the early release days.
Prescott is a Schoolwide Title 1 School with 69% of our students on Free and/or Reduced Lunch. That percentage has continued to increase over the past five years. Prescott began receiving Title I funds as a Targeted Assisted School in 2006. Prescott students are very diverse economically, ranging from affluent families to families who are struggling financially.
In 2007-08 and 2008-09, Prescott SPED students did not meet AYP creating the status of “Needs Improvement”. Parents were notified in the summer of 2009 that Prescott was a school in need of improvement. In 2009-10 and 2010-11, all Prescott students met AYP status in reading and math.
