Warm Up: Please close read – underline, highlight, annotate – Alexander’s letter to King Darius. Then write one word to describe the tone (general attitude or mood) of his letter at the bottom of the letter.
Class Work: Close read Alexander’s letter to Darius a second time and respond to the questions on p. 2 of the letter:
- Sourcing: What is the purpose of Alexander’s letter?
- Contextualization: What events led to Alexander’s negative opinion of the Persians?
- Close Reading: What claims does Alexander make about himself and his empire? What evidence from the text supports these claims?
