Transliteracy

What is transliteracy? And what does it mean to school librarians? In this Slideshare, Buffy Hamilton, school librarian at Creekview High School in Canton, Georgia, looks at multiple definitions of transliteracy during a panel discussion at the SLJ Summit 2011: The New World of Reading–Digital, Networked, Transliterate. She poses questions of what this “convergence of literacies” means both in classrooms and school libraries. Transliteracy requires active participation with multiple platforms and methods of delivery, as well as the ability to adapt to the ever growing types of media and messages. It isn’t about teaching one type of literacy in isolation. A group of LPS school librarians were able to attend the SLJ Summit and will be able to share more information on this topic.

The Future of the Book. from IDEO on Vimeo.

Check out this vision of the future of the book. It would be great to have something like the Nelson and Coupland versions right now; I’m not so certain about Alice. When I read I’m not looking for distractions. Your thoughts?

Build answers, not find answers!

If we want students to think, we need to teach them to ask questions. Not shallow questions, but questions of import. Questions that prompt contemplation and wonder.  During Jamie McKenzie’s sessions Beyond Cut & Paste, The Question Is the Answer, and The Role of the School Librarian, school librarians, administrators, instructional coaches, and curriculum specialists explored how to transform classrooms, empower student thinking, and engage learning. Learn more about McKenzie’s Questioning Toolkit and check out his website  from now on:  the educational technology journal. ( FNO )
