Mickle Bully Prevention Program / Bullying Resources

Mickle Bully-Prevention Program:

Goal: To educate and redirect all students to more positive behavior.

Important note: We will never label a student as a bully but instead address bullying behaviors displayed by any student

Mickle School-Wide Bully Prevention efforts are guided by the evidence based program: Olweus (OI-VAY-us), Bully Prevention Program. “The goal of OBPP is to change the norms around bullying behavior and to restructure the school setting itself so that bullying is less likely to occur or be rewarded.”

Once a student is identified (by students, teachers, parents, counselors, etc.) as displaying bullying behaviors that student will be interviewed by their grade level counselors and possibly referred to our Bully Program. Our Bully Program is carried out by counselors at each grade level.

Interventions:

Level 1: Counselors spend time one-on-one with the student educating them on the dangerous effects of bullying/bullying behaviors.

Level 2: Counselors spend time one-on-one with the student educating them on not only the dangerous effects of bullying behaviors but also going deeper into understanding themselves (conflict management, decision making, anger, etc.) Counselors also meet with teachers and family. Student may also be asked to participate in a small group designed to help the student stop bullying behaviors.

Level 3: Referred to Dr. Swearer’s T-BIP program at UNL.

Bully Resources:

Dr. Susan M. Swearer is a Professor of School Psychology at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL); Co-Director of the Bullying Research Network http://brnet.unl.edu; and Director of the Empowerment Initiative http://empowerment.unl.edu. She is the principal investigator on the Target Bullying Intervention Program and has a long-standing track record working with schools nationwide to reduce bullying behaviors. “Preventing Bullying Starts with Every Individual making a commitment to treating all humans with dignity, tolerance, and respect.” Dr. Swearer said that we need to recognize the complexity of Bullying Behaviors. A Multitiered approach is the Best Solution. We all need to practice being kind and brave to each other!  All of us our role models to our children and students.
