Reading

reading-a-book

Currently your child is working to be at a DRA level of 18-20 for quarter four. These leveled type books are available at the Holmes book room or the public library for parents to check out. Within leveled texts students should be able to read with accuracy, expression, reading punctuation and phrasing. This quarter your child’s reading must be a minimum of 40-60 words per minute.

This quarter we are also talking about what good readers do while reading. For example, good readers ask questions to make sure they understand what they are reading. This quarter we will study: summarizing, problem solving, sequencing events, noting details, cause and effect, predict/infer, categorizing and classifying.

Some spelling and sounds that will be coming up in quarter four:

  • Base words and endings (-s, -ed, -ing, -es, -ies, -er, -est)
  • Vowel pairs ow, oa, oo, oi, oy, aw, au
  • Sounds for y
  • Prefixes un- and re-
  • Digraphs sh, th, wh, ch, tch

Some things you can do at home to help your child to become a better reader are to practice their weekly high frequency words. These words are difficult to sound out and are found frequently in stories we read. The faster they read these words the quicker they will be to read our class texts. Students should know all of quarter three words within one minute a list. Begin studying quarter four words!

Things to practice at home:

  1. Read the paper books that come home weekly.
  2. Practice timing your child as they read (40-60+wpm). Let them time you as you read too.
  3. Check out Rookie Reader books from the public library or go to the book room at Holmes.
  4. Read to your child so they hear a fluent reader. Then follow by asking comprehension questions.
  5. Work on quarter four high frequency words.
  6. Weekly study the spelling words.
