Today I want to talk about the last couple of things we’ll be working on this semester:
The Photo Essay and the Portfolio.
For the Photo Essay, you can use photos you have already taken, or you can take new photos. A photo essay is basically a way to tell a story with multiple photos. We will learn how to use those photos to lay out a photo essay, which is what we do when we put together a Yearbook spread. The term “spread” refers to a two-page layout of photos, captions, a headline, and a short story. We will use the Online Design program provided by our Yearbook Publisher, Walsworth, and we’ll go over how to use that program tomorrow.
The Portfolio is a collection of your 10 best photos from the semester in a single gallery. You can be working on this at any time between now and the last class before the final exam. In addition to the regular two-sentence captions, you will also include a third sentence saying why you think it’s a good photo journalistically. The photos should showcase everything that you have learned over the semester.
Our final exam is on Thursday, May 23rd from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. At that time we will do two things: You will have an exam over caption writing (which will be the same format as the practice exercises we have done throughout the semester), and you will present your Portfolio to the class. We will project your portfolio on the screen and have you go through the photos with us. I’ll ask you to pick one or two photos that you think are your absolute best and talk a little bit about them and why you think they are your best photos.
Your Spring Sports assignment is DUE TODAY at the end of the period.
Please be sure to:
• Include 10 Action Shots in your gallery
