Composition

Rooms B202, (C110), B217, Media Center                                                                                          lanaka@lps.org

Composition is a class that focuses on the exploration of writing for academic purposes and focuses on the construction of essays. We will be writing every day and will read sample essays and at least two books of your choice. Among the forms of essays we will examine are: exposition, narration, description, classification/definition, process, persuasion, and evaluation.

Because writing is a process, it is important that you keep a record of your process. It is my expectation that for this class, you will keep the following in an organized manner:

  1. Your quick writes
  2. any pre-writes or graphic organizers
  3. notes
  4. drafts (with any comments)
  5. peer reviews
  6. final drafts
  7. all returned work

Grading:

                  Formative (20%):  Quick writes, drafts/notes/graphic organizers, reviews

Summative (80%): Portfolio including author’s notes, drafts/notes, and final draft

Texts: Subjects and Strategies, Visions Across the Americas, 50 Essays and /or 40 essays

Expectations:

Students will:

  • Wear ID badge at all times
  • Be in the room and in your seat with all materials for class on your desktop. Stow backpacks, purses under tables/chairs for ease of movement.
  • Follow all reasonable requests without argument.
  • Follow directions and participate fully in class.
  • Use appropriate language and topics in all class projects. If you are concerned about the appropriateness of a topic or language in a piece see me BEFORE doing the work or making the comment. Projects that are inappropriate will not be accepted. When in doubt ask.  Please understand that if you write about certain topics, I have legal obligations to act upon the information or share it with others.
  • Original work only that is turned in on time is graded for credit.  Late work is graded on a case-by-case basis.

    3. c.      Keep all school issued materials in good condition and use materials responsibly.
    4. d.     Tardy policy of the school is in force and will be followed. (If you are not in the classroom before the door, you are tardy. See planner for additional details. )

Grading Policies:

Work is turned in on the day it is due, an important life skill. If you are absent when major projects are due, you must get the work to school on the day it is due or make other arrangements with me. If there are special circumstances that require consideration (illness, a death in the family) talk to me prior to class. Take an active role in your own success and learning, start today to prepare for your future.

Grading Scale:

A = 90-100%                      B+ = 85-89%                  B = 80-84%                         C+ = 75-79%

C = 70-74%                         D+ = 65-69%                  D = 60-64%                          F = Below 60%

I understand the classroom expectations and policies as covered in this handout. I plan to follow these expectations in order to successfully complete Composition.
