Home of the Kodiaks
In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, The Trees for Success Campaign engages students and volunteers from The Home Depot and community partners to plant up trees at thirteen sites across the country, including Kooser Elementary. Our Trees for Success Ceremony and Planting Day was Thursday, October 15. We planted fifty trees, and each classroom was able to adopt a tree as their own.
The LPS website is featuring a story on our school dedication.
Candlewick Press has donated 160 children’s books to the library at Kooser Elementary School. The books represent a cross section of Candlewick’s collection. Read more about the donation in this LPS website story.

Friday, October 2 was an exciting day for one of our Kooser students. Not only was it Cooper’s birthday, but in a surprise assembly it was announced that he had won a laptop in the Hy-Vee Smiles for Education program. In addition, Hy-Vee awarded Kooser Elementary with a check for $5000 as part of the award. Thank you Hy-Vee! After the Hy-Vee presentation, our fifth graders debuted our new Kooser cheer! Go Kodiaks!
We had a fabulous assembly on August 28 as our school mascot and colors were finally revealed! The North Star High School Drum Line made a surprise appearance to add to the excitement of the day. Ted Kooser was also present for the big announcement. Mrs. Jablonski and Dr. Steen stretched out the kids’ anticipation until they finally revealed they were wearing Kooser Kodiak shirts with our new school colors of Red and Silver! A letter from the Mayor of Kodiak, Alaska was shared and a short movie about the Kodiak Bear was viewed. What started with over 200 mascot and color suggestions was narrowed down to three finalists. Here were the percentage votes for each finalist…
Kodiaks: 70% | Owls 20% | Poets 10%
Red and Silver: 57% | Blue and Green 25% | Light Blue and Brown 18%
