Dear Kloefkorn Families,

If you feel you don’t get much information from your child when you ask “How was school
today?” I’ve listed a few questions that you might like to try.

  • What is the coolest thing that happened at school today?
  • Pretend you are the teacher, How would you describe the day?
  • What made you laugh today?
  • How were you kind or helpful today?
  • How was someone kind or helpful to you today?
  • Can you tell me something you learned that you’d like to know more about?

As we continue to work to keep a steady traffic flow in the morning as students are dropped off
at school, please have your child ready to hop out of your vehicle when you pull up to the curb.
Thanks so much!

Flu & Cold

Dear Kloekforn Families,

Health officials in Lincoln have reported an increased number of flu cases in our community. Lincoln Public Schools is currently not seeing high rates of absenteeism in our schools.  But as a preventative measure, we are sharing some important information with you to help you and your family guard against illness during the flu season.

Cold vs. Flu
A cold is a milder respiratory illness than the flu. While cold symptoms can make you feel bad for a few days, flu symptoms can make you feel quite ill for a few days to weeks.

Cold symptoms:
-sore throat
-runny nose
-congestion
-cough

Flu symptoms:
-sore throat
-fever
-headache
-muscle aches
-soreness
-congestion
-cough

Most flu symptoms gradually improve over three to five days, but it’s not uncommon to feel run down for a week or more. It is strongly recommended that staff and students with a fever over
100 degrees stay home until they are fever-free for at least a minimum of 24 hours without the
aid of fever reducing medication. We recommend that students and staff also seek the advice of their medical provider in regards to use of antiviral medication and when to safely return to school.

At Lincoln Public Schools, we have an Infection Control Committee that continuously monitors and works diligently with all staff year-round to make sure we are prepared for flu season. The Infection Control Committee includes community partners such as the County Health Department to monitor illness in the community and within the schools — helping us guide our coordinated response.

A weekly absence report is posted on the LPS website under the Parents tab. Our absences have remained similar to previous years. We are monitoring flu cases and request families work with their medical providers to guide school attendance. At a minimum, we request that students remain out of school for 24 hours once fever-free without the aid of fever reducing medication.

School nurses have posted information around school buildings reminding students to cover their cough and wash hands to prevent the spread of infection. School nurses often go into classrooms and provide instruction on healthy habits, especially to early childhood and elementary classrooms. This would be a great opportunity to reinforce these important healthy habits at home. Thank you for partnering with us in keeping our students healthy and ready to learn.

From the Principal’s Desk
Kloefkorn Families,

Our students are quickly settling in this week as we officially begin 3rd quarter and a new year! We are all looking forward to a productive semester. As you know, our staff and students have a laser sharp focus on learning and giving 100% effort every day! Parents sometimes ask me what our teachers do during early dismissal PLC Days. I’m hoping the following information will help explain what teachers accomplish on a typical monthly PLC (Professional Learning Community) early dismissal day.

As you know, one designated day each month students are dismissed at 1:33. Our PLCs begin as soon as students are dismissed. All of our classroom teachers meet in grade level teams in our library. Our specialists (art, music, media, PE, computer) meet at schools around the district for their PLC team meetings.

  • They use a data teams process to look at very important math and reading standards that are essential to student learning. They review individual student pre-assessment data, and analyze this information to determine student strengths and areas of need on this important concept.
  • Then, staff will discuss the instructional strategy they will use to teach the needed skill.
  • The next step in this process will be the team agreeing on the amount of time they will focus
instruction on this skill, and deciding when they will post-test the skill/standard. From this data,
    reteach groups are formed.

  • Then the process starts all over again.

As you can see, this is a very focused time which allows teachers to dig deeper into how to help every student learn. Our PLC work is an ongoing process and although we concentrate on this work during our monthly PLC early release days our teachers also meet on the second Tuesday of each month after school to do additional PLC work. In fact, most teachers would tell you PLC conversations happen on a daily basis at Kloefkorn.

Warmest regards,
Polly Bowhay

Permit Deadline (KG & 5th Grade – pay special attention)

If you currently live outside of the attendance area of the school you plan to attend next year you may need to turn in a permit in by January 8th. If you are currently attending a school on a permit you do not need to fill out a new one unless you have an incoming kindergartner or 6th grader.

Incoming Kindergarten Students-

If your family is here on permit you still need to fill out a new one for your incoming Kindergarten student.

Outgoing 5th Grade Students-

As a reminder, many of our families fall into the Moore Middle School attendance area now. If you plan to go to Lux (or any other middle school) you will likely need to fill out a permit for next year.

Kindergarten Registration 2018-19
If you are currently living in our attendance area and have a child that will turn five before July 31, you should have been asked either in person or via email to confirm Kindergarten enrollment for the 2018-19 school year. If you (or someone you know) believes they should have received a email  from us, but did not, please contact the school as soon as possible.

Holiday Teacher Wish List
If you would like to provide a meaningful gift for your child’s teacher this season, we encourage you to look over the teacher’s wish list. While gifts are certainly NEVER expected, we have had many families inquire as to what they could do to brighten the day of their favorite teacher(s) during the upcoming season.

Lost and Found

Please have your child(ren) check the lost and found for misplaced hats, gloves, coats etc. Items not claimed by December 22 will be donated to charity.

From The Principal’s Desk

The cooler weather is finally starting to arrive and as you know, we are in store for many more chilly winter days.

We will make every attempt to take children outside for recess throughout the winter.  Fresh air and exercise fuel their bodies for learning throughout the school day.  If it is raining or bitterly cold we have a variety of options for indoor recess.

Please make sure your child has a warm coat, hat and gloves/mittens.  We appreciate names in coats, hats and boots.  Also, younger children will benefit from practicing zipping, buttoning and snapping.

In the event school closes due to weather, families will receive a phone call from the district office between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m.  We know this is very early, but this allows working parents a little more time to make arrangements for childcare for the day. Also, you can log onto the LPS website: www.lps.org for school closures and of course, the local television and radio stations will carry the latest announcements.

Thank you for your help as we prepare for the winter months.  Bundle up, eat healthy, get plenty of rest and wash those hands!

Bubba’s Closet

As cold weather looms, it’s that time of year to donate new and gently used winter wear for Bubba’s Closet, the clothes give-away effort facilitated by the elementary principals of Lincoln Public Schools – to keep our community’s children warm.

You can donate Oct 2-27 at any Hangers Cleaners location in Lincoln, where they clean the clothes for free.  Donations are appreciated that include coats, sweaters, scarves, hats, sweatshirts, mittens and gloves.  This year you can also donate at Roca Berry Farm, Oct 16-22 – and on Saturday, Oct. 21, LPS elementary principals will be at Roca Berry Farm all day to personally thank you for your donations.

The Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools is also accepting monetary donations for Bubba’s Closet. Click here to donate online.

The Bubba’s Closet clothes give-away is set for Saturday, Nov. 11, at McPhee Elementary School, 820 Goodhue Blvd.  Any elementary student, accompanied by an adult, may choose appropriate items of clothing to adopt and use.

LPS School Psychologist Book Drive
LPS School Psychologist Book Drive for Early Childhood Education is November 1-17, 2017. Bring us your new and gently used books and drop them off with the School Psychologist at your school. The books will be distributed to families being served through the LPS Early Childhood Program. Books should be for infants and children through age 5 and be in good condition, without torn pages or writing in them. Please- no magazines, textbooks, outdated nonfiction, encyclopedia sets or coloring books.

Fall Parties

Kloefkorn’s Fall Classroom parties will be here soon and we need your help! The party is on Tuesday, November 21 – about 3 weeks away. Share how  your  child is learning in relationship to grade level standards

Share notes regarding your child’s behavior

You might prepare by…
Discussing school with your  child
Writing down questions
Jotting down changes and growth you have noticed at home
Discussing how your child gets along socially

You might want to ask the teacher…
About your  child’s progress in skills
If your  child appears to be working up to potential

About your  child’s social interaction
What  the teacher perceives as the strengths  of your  child
About your child’s work habits
If your  child seems to enjoy school and the other children

The resource teachers, speech language pathologist and reading recovery teacher will be participating in as many conferences as possible.  Also, you are able to schedule conferences with our specialists.  I hope you will be able to visit them to find out about  the exciting learning that takes place in these classes every day.

From the Principal’s Desk

Kloefkorn Families,

As we complete our 6th week I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on all of the
amazing things happening at Kloefkorn.

I’d first like to thank the entire Kloefkorn community for warmly welcoming me as
the new principal of this beautiful school. One of my very favorite parts of the day is
greeting our students outside each morning. I get to welcome happy children with
big smiles on their faces and ready to learn every day. I also love visiting classrooms
where I observe highly engaged and motivated students who are showing their best
effort.

Kloefkorn teachers enter our building each morning well organized and prepared
to give 100% effort all day long. Parents can be assured that our teachers are highly
skilled and follow all LPS curriculum guidelines. I’m amazed as I watch our
dedicated support staff (office staff, para educators, health office staff,  cafeteria staff and custodial crew) go above and beyond at all times, which is just business as usual in this building.

We have an orderly and safe school. I’ve heard from many parents that drop off and pick up in the front loop at arrival and dismissal is going very smoothly this year. Our loop is cleared by 3:00 every day! Thank you to everyone who follows the north to south traffic flow when entering the loop from Glass Ridge Drive. We’ve opened up the Attica Room this year to add more space for our students to eat lunch in the cafeteria, having the extra space also helps with the noise level at lunchtime. The strong student behavioral expectations that were set the first year Kloefkorn opened continue on, such as students walking with voices off and with purpose throughout our hallways. We have a large and beautiful playground. As students play safely on our playground equipment we continue to also have the same playground rules as in the past. As an example, we do not allow students to play tag under the green playground equipment. When 50+ children are playing on this equipment it is not safe for students to be playing tag/running games in this same space. Our very large grass area has plenty of room for running and playing games.

I invite you to come and visit school at any time to see our students and staff in action. I’m always happy to answer questions, listen to comments/concerns or just chat. Please stop by the office, call or email me anytime! This is truly an inspiring community to be part of and I look forward to an incredible school year.

Respectfully,
Polly Bowhay

Principal’s News

Dear Kloefkorn Families,

It is hard to believe we have completed our 4th week of school already!  I hope your child is enjoying getting reacquainted with classmates, making new friends and building relationships with our highly skilled teachers.  We look forward to this year ahead and thank you in advance for your support.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind all of you about the importance following our arrival and dismissal procedures to insure the safety of our students and to provide a smooth transition at a very busy time of day at Kloefkorn.  Please remember:

  • When dropping of your children in the morning in front/back loop, please have them ready to go (backpacks on, coats on….) so they can quickly exit your vehicle. This will allow for more families to use the front/back loop.
  • When in the front/back loop please do not get out of your vehicle when you are dropping off students in the morning or picking them up after school.
  • Please have your students exit your vehicle on the curb side.
  • You may not park and get out of your vehicle in the Kloefkorn front/back loop during arrival or dismissal. If you’d like to park and get out of your vehicle during this time please park on the street.
  • At dismissal, when driving through the front loop, please pull to the curb at the first open place to park (which may be up the driveway).  Our goal is to keep all vehicles moving to allow for as many of you as possible to pull into the loop.
  • Thank you so much for your cooperation!

At Kloefkorn we want all students to be successful. In order to ensure that students find success, Lincoln Public Schools has developed a framework of best practices for supporting student behavior throughout the school day. This framework includes evidence-based practices that we know lead to more positive outcomes for students. Some of the most powerful practices faculty and staff use include:

  • Developing and teaching all students our school and classroom expectations
  • Acknowledging positive behavior when we see it
  • Consistently practicing strategies that prevent problem behavior before it happens
  • Establishing consistent consequences
  • Using data to make decisions

All staff at Kloefkorn are working especially hard during these first weeks of school to teach our expectations and acknowledge positive behavior when we see it. In this way, we know we are laying the foundation for a productive and positive school year.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Bowhay

Kloefkorn Team Web Pages

All of our grade level team websites are currently “under construction”.  The district has asked  that all LPS teachers move to  individual LMS pages, which can be accessed on ParentVue. Our Kloefkorn teacher training for the new LMS websites will be in early October.  We will let you know as soon as our new LMS teacher websites are ready to go.

Picture Day

Be sure to mark your calendar for September 20th. If for some reason your child(ren) are not in attendance that day or you are not satisfied with the photo, retakes will be on October 25th in the morning.  Click here for 5 useful tips to help your child get ready for a great picture day! Information about ordering will go home today. Order packets will go home next week. If you would like to order online ahead of time you can visit https://my.lifetouch.com/mylifetouch/#/ and use picture day ID# BN207132Q0.

A Note from the Health Office

Every year in the fall a dentist comes to Kloefkorn to see all students who have not been seen by a dentist within the last year. If your student has seen a dentist in the last year please send me an email (rhadley@lps.org) or a quick phone call (402-436-1148 ext 2), with the date of the exam, and I will update our records for your student. By doing this it will eliminate the need for the student to be pulled out of class and be seen by the dentist. Thank you so much for your help in making this a successful year.

Birthdays and Celebrations/Lincoln Public Schools Guidelines
Birthdays are a special day in a child’s life. We will recognize birthdays. Please DO NOT send birthday invitations, treats, balloon bouquets, flowers, etc., to the school. These items will not be delivered to classrooms.

We are not able to share student names, addresses, and phone numbers. It is district policy and can be found the K-5 Common Practices online book and/or http://home.lps.org/threat/.

The Kloefkorn PTO annually publishes a Student Directory that can be used for this purpose.  The PTO’s annual membership fee includes one copy of the directory per family, and is currently in the process of publication – watch for it soon!

Collecting Box Tops is an easy way to raise money for Kloefkorn. For every Box Top we collect, the school earns $.10.

Goal:                10,000 Box Tops by Oct 25
15,000 more Box Tops by February 23

All Box Tops will go towards bringing an Artist-in-Residence to Kloefkorn in May.  This opportunity builds on Kloefkorn’s already incredible art program and gives students a “one-of-a kind” experience.

FALL BOX TOPS CONTEST

Grades with the most Box Tops on Wednesday, Oct 25th will win class parties.
•          1st Place –  Popsicle Party
