From the Principal’s Desk
Our students are quickly settling in this week as we officially begin 3rd quarter and a new year! We are all looking forward to a productive semester. As you know, our staff and students have a laser sharp focus on learning and giving 100% effort every day! Parents sometimes ask me what our teachers do during early dismissal PLC Days. I’m hoping the following information will help explain what teachers accomplish on a typical monthly PLC (Professional Learning Community) early dismissal day.
As you know, one designated day each month students are dismissed at 1:33. Our PLCs begin as soon as students are dismissed. All of our classroom teachers meet in grade level teams in our library. Our specialists (art, music, media, PE, computer) meet at schools around the district for their PLC team meetings.
- They use a data teams process to look at very important math and reading standards that are essential to student learning. They review individual student pre-assessment data, and analyze this information to determine student strengths and areas of need on this important concept.
- Then, staff will discuss the instructional strategy they will use to teach the needed skill.
- The next step in this process will be the team agreeing on the amount of time they will focus
instruction on this skill, and deciding when they will post-test the skill/standard. From this data,
reteach groups are formed.
- Then the process starts all over again.
As you can see, this is a very focused time which allows teachers to dig deeper into how to help every student learn. Our PLC work is an ongoing process and although we concentrate on this work during our monthly PLC early release days our teachers also meet on the second Tuesday of each month after school to do additional PLC work. In fact, most teachers would tell you PLC conversations happen on a daily basis at Kloefkorn.
CogAT Testing (2nd Grade Only)
We will administer the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to students in grade 2 on January 17th, 18th and 19th from 8:30-9:30. The CogAT is a norm referenced academic abilities assessment. During the testing periods, we encourage you to make sure your children are in school unless they are ill. The best preparation for these tests is to come to school well rested with a positive attitude toward taking the tests. CogAT test results should be returned in February and will be shared with families as soon as they are available. If you have further questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the main office.
Kindergarten Registration 2018-19 – Save the Date
If you are currently living in our attendance area and have a child that will turn five before July 31, you should have been contacted by now to confirm your 2018-19 Kindergarten enrollment. If you have not or know someone that has not please contact the school as soon as possible. You can click here for important upcoming dates including registration and orientation.
LPS CLASS Plan Survey
During the month of January, LPS staff, students, and parents will have the opportunity to participate in a brief LPS CLASS Plan Survey to obtain feedback on how technology is being used to support learning. Survey data will help LPS evaluate CLASS Plan implementation, align Professional Learning efforts, and inform technology purchasing decisions.

After School Programs
Beat the winter blues with another set of after school classes! Classes are open to all Kloefkorn students who wish to participate. This semester the following classes are being offered: Lego, P.E., Art, Theatre, STEAM, Games, and Knitting. A full list of class descriptions, meeting times, costs, etc can be found on the Kloefkorn PTO website. Fall/Winter term classes will run from January 29 through March 22.
Registration will be open from today, January 12 through Thursday, January 25.
Payment for classes will be made online at the time of registration.
Please make note of class dates before registering! Classes will meet immediately after school.
At the end of class your child will be lead to the front doors of the school or to Family Services.

Ready for the Biggest Box Top Competition Ever!! Collection starts NOW and ends Feb 23. Call the relatives! Ask for Facebook help! We need to collect 15,000 Box Tops to help bring an Artist-in-Residence to Kloefkorn. Artist plans are already underway. Announcement to be made soon!

Help Needed – Junior Achievement
Kloefkorn classes are in need of volunteers to teach Junior Achievement. Every classroom at Kloefkorn will have Junior Achievement some point throughout the year and this is a great opportunity for parents to get involved in their student’s classroom! The time commitment for volunteering is just 45 minutes for five days. The lessons are all planned out and come with a step-by-step guidebook and all of the materials (worksheets, board games, posters, etc.) are provided. The lessons focus on jobs, money, and entrepreneurship. JA staff will also go over all of the material with you before you volunteer!

Spring Parties – Volunteers Needed
Classroom Valentine’s Day parties will be here soon and we need your help. The party is Wednesday, February 14 – about 4 weeks away. Parties last 30 minutes and will be held at the following times: Preschool – 10:30; 1st grade – 1:15; all other grades (K, 2-5) – 2:15. The party should involve kids eating the PTO-provided snack, playing games, and/or doing a craft. More party specifics will be provided soon. Did you know that the Lied Bookmobile parks in front of Kloefkorn every other Wednesday at 6:00-7:00p.m? It carries adult and juvenile fiction and nonfiction, magazines, DVDs and videos, audiobooks, music CDs, video games, and large-print titles. Upcoming dates are: January 17 and 31, and February 14 and 28.
