PLC day is October 25thStudents will be dismissed at 1:33

Friday, October 28th, report cards will come home in your child’s Friday Folder.

**Our PTO sponsored Fall party will also be on Friday, October 28th from 2:15- 2:53. Students usually do a craft, play a game, and then have a special treat in their classroom. Parents are welcome to attend if they would like.

 

 

Red Ribbon Week October 24-28, 2016

We focus on making healthy choices by exercising; eating healthy and not doing things that harm our bodies. Each day is a different theme.

Monday, October 24:

“Take my hand and make a stand!” Students will sign a red hand. The hands will be hung in the hallway in the shape of a ribbon.

Tuesday, October 25:

“We’re voting for our future, be drug free!” Students can wear red, white and blue.

Wednesday, October 26:

“Life is sweeter when it is drug free!” Teachers will pass out Smarties to each student.

Thursday, October 27:

“Life is a ‘hole’ lot better drug free!” Students will receive a Lifesaver.

Friday, October 28:

“Team Up Against Drugs!” Students and staff are asked to wear Cavett or their favorite team shirt.

 

Grandparents & Grandfriends Lunch is scheduled for November 1st to November 4th, during the lunch hours for each grade.  Our kindergarten lunch is from 10:55-11:15. Grandparents have the option to order lunch from Jersey Mikes to enjoy while they dine with their little ones.

Thursday, November 3 is picture retake day. If would like to have your child’s picture retaken, please let us know and be sure to send back their picture packet on that day or before. If your child was absent on the first take, new ordering envelopes will be available. Just let us know if you need one!

 BIST:  This month our school-wide BIST focus will be on:

* Apologies: What do they look like and sound like?

* Gateway Behaviors and School Assembly/Audience Behaviors

* Greetings (looking at those who greet you and respond)

We are going to be making a picture with our family and asking the children to label their pictures.  If your child needs help spelling names of their immediate family (sisters/brothers), could you please write it on a note and send it with your child?

Week 1 

This week our class will be focusing on the rules they follow at home and in school. Children also will be reading stories about the laws people follow in their neighborhoods and communities.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.

Word Workout

  • Vocabulary: cooperate, rules Make a chart of the rules your child follows. Encourage your child to think about the ways we cooperate, or work together with others.

  • My Words to Know

High-Frequency Word: to Fill a small pan with shaving cream. Have your child write the word to in the shaving cream each time you use the word to in a sentence.

Category Words: action words Encourage your child to think of laws and rules to follow at home, at school, and in the community.

Phonics: i Help your child think of words that include the letter i, such as ink, pin, inch, if, sit, hid, and in. Write the words on paper. Then ask your child to underline the letter i in each word.

Comprehension: key details

Have your child look closely at the picture of a kindergarten classroom. Ask your child to circle and describe details that show how the classmates are following rules and cooperating with each other.

Week 2 

This week our class will be reading stories about sounds we hear in our neighborhoods and communities. Your child will experiment with ways to make sounds.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.

Word Workout

  • Vocabulary: listen, volume Go outside together and invite your child to listen to the sounds in your neighborhood. Talk about what makes the sound. Describe the volume of the sound.

  • My Words to Know

High-Frequency Word: and Write the word and, then have your child trace it. Have your child search for and circle the word and in a newspaper.

Category Words: sound words Sit outside together and listen for different sounds. Ask your child to identify what is making the sound. Have your child describe the sound.

Phonics: n Search for objects that begin or end with the letter n, such as nails and pan. Write the words on sticky notes and have your child put the notes on each object.

Comprehension: key details

Have your child look closely at the picture of the noisy city. Encourage your child to circle the details of people and objects that make sounds. Discuss the kinds of sounds you might hear in a city.

Week 3 

This week our class will be reading stories about the places we visit in our neighborhoods and communities. Your child will talk about these places and the people we see and visit there.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.

Word Workout

  • Vocabulary: routine, neighborhood Talk about a weekend routine in the neighborhood. Use the words first, next, then, and last.

  • My Words to Know

High-Frequency Word: go Write the word go in the air. Ask the question, Where do you like to go? Invite your child to complete the sentence: I like to go to the ___.

Category Words: sequence words Play a game called “What are we going to do?” Encourage your child to use sequence words such as first, next, then, and last.

Phonics: c Play a rhyming game and invite your child to guess words that begin with the letter c. If your child does not guess the word, give another clue. Then make a list of the words your child guesses correctly. Read the list together.

Comprehension: character, setting, events

Guide your child in telling a story. Ask your child to think of the characters in the story, where the story takes place, and what events will happen. As your child tells the story, write it down.
