Reading

Reading is taught in both large and small group settings.  During large group instruction, we read big books; do phonemic awareness such as rhyming, beginning sounds, segmenting and blending; learn letters and sight words.

During guided reading groups,  students are grouped together according to their reading ability.  Lessons focus on specific letter and word work depending on the students’ previous knowledge.  As students progress, books are selected that target the correct reading level and focus on skills that will  promote reading growth.  One important aspect of guided reading groups is your support from home.  Reading bags will be sent home with your child on most days that your child reads with the teacher.  Please have your child read the book in the bag to you and return it to school the next school day.

Listed below are the District Reading Objectives:

Identify letters and sounds.

Phonological Awareness:  blending, segmenting and identifying beginning sounds.

Identify 40 sight words, spell them correctly and use them in reading and writing.

Grammar:  Identify noun, verb

Reading levels begin at a level A and progress up through levels: 1, 2, 3, 4 etc:  By the end of kindergarten, we expect students to read at DRA level 4, demonstrating reading fluency and comprehension skills.
