Four students of North Star High School have designed shoes for a Vans Custom Contest.
Their shoes have been chosen as part of the top 50 in the United States! Public voting is taking place until May 13th. We need your help! Please go to the website from your own devices. Because the website records IP addresses, you cannot vote from the same location more than once because that IP address has already been used. Use your phone, iPad, computer at home, etc. and vote for North Star! The kids can win a trip to New York City and North Star has a chance to win $50,000, $4,000, or even $10,000 depending upon how the voting goes.

So get to voting! Have everyone you know vote too!

Kahoa has been awarded the Alliance for a Healthier Generations bronze level of recognition.

Kahoa has achieved some of these requirements, and several other requirements are listed on the alliance site:

Requires all students at the elementary school level to participate in a minimum of 60 minutes of physical education per
week (or 120 minutes of physical education per 2 weeks)

Drinking water is available to students free of charge at all times during the school day
School grounds and/or buildings are open to students, their families and the community for access to physical activities

School has secured funds or leveraged resources to support wellness priorities for students and staff
School’s wellness goals are integrated into the overall School Improvement Plan
School tracks students’ body mass index and reports the results to the district in aggregate on an annual basis

Up to 8 ounce servings of milk and 100% juice
• Fat-free or low fat regular and flavored milk with up to 150 calories / 8
ounces*
• 100% juice with no added sweeteners, up to 120 calories / 8 ounces,
and with at least 10% of the recommended daily value for three or

Kahoa Celebrates Fitness

The Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools presented Eric Vacek, physical education teacher at Kahoa Elementary, with the John Prasch Health and Physical Fitness Award during a dedication ceremony at Kahoa Elementary on Oct. 12.

Mr. Prasch, a former superintendent of the Lincoln Public Schools, believed very strongly not only in educating students academically, but also in teaching them to appreciate and practice living habits that promote good health for a lifetime.

Pictured: Russ Reckewey, principal at Kahoa Elementary School; Ruth Gerber, Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools; and Eric Vacek, Physical Education teacher at Kahoa.

Vacek was nominated for this award by his peers for making a significant contribution to students’ lives by promoting health and physical fitness in the classroom. The award created by Edward and Mary Copple in honor of John Prasch includes a $1,000 stipend.

At our Kahoa Celebration we had the Northeast Rocket, Dr. Steve Joel , Northeast drum line, and Kahoa community members. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Omaha gave a wonderful new “fitness”playground to Kahoa elementary. Here are some photos of the Celebration.

Kahoa PTO Honors Staff

Tuesday, May 1, 2012, Kahoa PTO honored three staff members. Dr. Wendy Badje will be leaving Kahoa to become Principal at Rousseau Elementary, and Nancy Anderson and Jeanene Cordes will be retiring at the end of the school year. In addition to the regular business meeting with election of officers, a guest speaker gave a program on Lincoln Parks and Recreation summer programs. At the close of the meeting, the group enjoyed cake and punch to honor the staff members.
