Reading I and Reading II

Reading Words

Students in Reading I and Reading II will practice and learn survivor terms and survivor symbols found in the home and in the community.  The goal is for each term to be recognized, read, recalled and defined.  Here are some of the words in flash card form that you may print off and practice at home.

Book List

August Welcome Back to North Star!!!

Students in Reading I and Reading II will prepare introductory information to share about themselves with their peers, teachers and parents.  The “ME” pages will assist students in identifying their likes and dislikes, their personal goals related to job skills and recreational interests.   Many of these assignments will be part of the students portfolio which parents may review at Parent-Teacher Conferences (October 10 & 11, 4-7 p.m.).  We will also delve into books about pets, especially dogs.  We may even see a Domestic pup in our hallway in the very near future! More on this topic to come!

September

  • Reading I – Students will practice writing survivor personal language.  Items which will be practiced every day will include full name, home address, phone number, birth date, student i.d. number and computer lab password.  Additional items to be read and written include emergency contact information, calendar months and days of the week.   Students will also have the opportunity to listen to animal short stories and answer comprehension questions.   We will visit our Media Center every Thursday for personal reading selections.  There will also be read aloud times for students to read to peers and for quiet time reading on a weekly basis.
  • Reading II – We will learn about dogs and cats and other pet-friendly animals through August and September.  Students will have the opportunities to determine what kind of pet would be right for them as they transition to adulthood.   Animals are important social creatures for many people in our society.  Through a variety of reading and hands-on experiences, your student will likely be able to determine if they are a person who would like to take care of a furry friend.

October

  • Reading I – Students will continue working on mastering personal survivor information.   We will also study the season of autumn in our short story readings.  Several art projects will enhance our reading comprehension regarding the fall season.
  • Reading II –  Pssst….Word has it that Elvis is in the house!   Students will read a book all about Elvis Presley.  They will also experience a lot of Elvis’ musical hits!

November

  • Reading I & II  – Students will read and/or listen to a Truman Capote short story of The Christmas Visitor.  More on this later, Gators!
