Jullisa says “They let in 300 trucks per day at the landfill.”

Patience says “People threw trash out of their windows back in the olden days.”

Sophee says “They can recycle plastic by melting it down and making it into jackets, carpet, shirts, bottles and bags. They have 35 employees working at the landfill.”

Ben says “You can recycle paper, tin and cardboard things.”

Reegan says “Lots of people go to the drop-off site to recycle. There are 31 drop off sites in Lincoln.”

Brandon says “They put the dirt on the trash to cover it up to keep animals away, so it doesn’t stink, and so it won’t blow away. Also, they used to take their trash to the Sunken Gardens.”

Caleb says “There are over 5,000 tires recycled. Tires are banned from the landfill. They are charged $10,000 per day if they bring a tire into the landfill”

Shamarr says “There is a big machine with rollers to flatten the trash.”

Ariana says “They put clay as the bottom layer. It is 2 feet deep. The clay keeps the water from dripping into the soil so we don’t have to drink yucky garbage water.”

Emily says “There’s a station that’s silver and it has lots of pipes and has Methane gas.”

Ayden says “Each truck is charged $25 per ton. They know how many tons each truck because they weigh each truck when they come in.”

David says “The gas at the landfill is explosive and very dangerous. It’s called Methane gas. It can create enough electricity to power 2,500 homes.

Cayden says “Washers and dryers are banned from the landfill. If the people see even one washer or dryer thrown in the landfill, every day they are charged $10,000. They can recycle the metal from the washers and dryers.”

Laina says “You can recycle cardboard, plastic, paper, jars, wooden fences, and metal. At the landfill if they get too many leaves in a pile it can start on fire.”

Alexa says “When you recycle paper it breaks down until it becomes toilet paper and we can’t recycle it anymore.”

Darrek says “We saw some cool trucks. There was a blue building where they repair their machines.”

Kia says “They put leaves in paper bags. They use the leaves to make compost.”

Olivia says “The landfill is open 362 days. They are closed on New Year’s, Christmas and Thanksgiving. Isn’t that crazy?”

Zuriah says “They recycle plastic.”

Vanessa says “Plastic bottles can be made into carpet. Tin cans can be made into appliances.”

Mrs. Hollibaugh says “2,510 years ago was the first time garbage started being collected. This was in Athens, Greece. In Lincoln, the first dump was in the Sunken Gardens. The 2nd dump was Haymarket Park. Then a landfill was opened on N. 48th. Now we use the Bluff Road landfill. ”
