As of December of 2016, music is considered by law to be an academic subject and at Wysong we believe that! Students are learning specific vocabulary, some in Italian and working on those innate skills like steady beat and matching pitch. In music we create, perform, respond and connect, with music being for ALL children. Check out more on music education at the National Association for Music Education website nafme.org and click on the advocacy tab for more information.

Hello Wysong families,
My name is Mrs. Bush and I am thrilled to be the first Music Specialist at Wysong Elementary. I just finished my 27th year of teaching and my 15th year with LPS with additional teaching experiences in Kentucky and Ohio. I also serve on the National Executive Board of the National Association for Music Education as President of the North Central Division. My passion is passing on my love of music by allowing students to CREATE, PERFORM, RESPOND AND CONNECT to music. Please check my page to find contact information, music curriculum, essential learning outcomes, and important dates/events.
Please feel free to contact me at email@example.com. I’m looking forward to another great year of working with and getting to know all of my Wysong family!
Learning Targets in music are goals put in student friendly “I Can” statements. While there are other activities we work on at the same time, here are the current essential learning objectives for each grade level:
Kindergarten: I can identify long and short sounds.
1st Grade: I can identify and use instruments to play with a song.
2nd Grade: I can identify different woodwind instruments
3rd Grade: I can rehearse for our musical
4th Grade: I can identify different tempos
5th Grade: I can compose music using triplet rhythms.
Wysong School is fortunate to have been chosen by the New York Metropolitan Opera to be a part of their HD Live in Schools. We are the only district in Nebraska and one of only @50 schools across the country to be a part of this program. The Met provides educational materials and free tickets for students in the 5th grade to attend Opera streamed live from the Met to the Ross Theater on UNL’s campus. Tickets are available on a first come first served basis and permission slips are sent home before each performance. Parents are always welcome to join us by purchasing their ticket at the Ross Theater before the show. The study of Opera is an LPS benchmark for 5th graders in music.
Here is the 2018-19 Season for 5th graders – the season has just concluded. Be looking for a new season of great opera for 5th grade, Fall 2019.
The Nebraska Board of Education approved the first ever Fine Arts Standards in 2014 which include Visual Art, Dance, Theater, Media Arts and Music. Please click on the link below to see the Standards in Music. LPS is currently in the process of updating the music curriculum for students in grades K-12 based on these state standards.
