Heritage School is approaching…

Our class will be attending Heritage School on Wednesday, December 10th. Heritage school is a field study immersion experience that is part of the Nebraska history students are learning in Social Studies.

Heritage School was originally the Cunningham School in Saunders County. It has been restored as an authentic reproduction of a one-room prairie school.

Students will experience what a day was like in a one-room schoolhouse in 1892. During this “role play”, students will participate in songs, stories, and other activities that are authentic to the time period.

We have begun the process of preparing which includes learning songs sung in the 1800’s. Here is a song book if you want to sing at home!  Heritage School Song book

LUNCH INFORMATION:

Common lunches for pioneer children included:

  • Leftovers…cold pancakes from breakfast
  • Sandwiches…cheese, jelly, egg, butter, honey, lard, sugar, honey, molasses, or syrup
  • Boiled or baked potato (also served as hand warmers in their pockets on cold mornings)
  • Fresh fruits and veggies…apples, pears, plums, carrots, cabbage wedges
  • Cookies…molasses, oatmeal, sugar or snicker doodles (cookies were considered special treats).

Lunches were often wrapped in cloth. You may choose to use wax paper to wrap items. Students will also need a slate rag that can be any piece of cloth. It will cover the items in their tin or basket and help identify which container is theirs. If you would prefer, the school will make your child’s lunch and bill their Snap Account.
