Striving to create a climate which values diversity, individual differences and high standards
Welcome to the Hartley Elementary website! Our mission is to strive to create a climate which values diversity, individual differences and high standards for academic achievement and social responsibility. We will accept no limits on the learning potential of any child.
Hartley Elementary was opened in 1921 and was named after the late Ellis T. Hartley who was superintendent of schools at the turn of the century. Our student school day is from 9:10-3:48 PM. Our school is organized into grade level instructional teams; kindergarten through fifth grade. All staff works closely with the administrative team to provide focused instruction as we implement a rigorous academic program across every grade level. In addition, specialists in the areas of technology, music, library media, and physical education use their talents and expertise to deliver a rich, well-rounded program.
At Hartley, we provide a safe, orderly, respectful environment, which promotes high levels of student engagement and performance. Honoring the diversity and unique strengths and talents of each student guides our planning for individual success. There are two guiding principles for acceptable: first, it is never okay to be hurtful; and second, it is never okay to be disruptive. We strive to implement common expectations across all programming beginning with before school childcare and ending with after school childcare, clubs, and activities.
Hartley Elementary is a Title I School serving 290 multicultural students in kindergarten through 5th grade. 23.8% of our students participate in the English Language Learner program. 86% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. 15% of our students participate in the special education program. Hartley is an ethnically diverse school (31.5% Hispanic/Latino, 19.2% African American, 4.6% Asian American, 1.7% American Indian, 31.5% White, and 11.5% two or more races). At Hartley, we meet high learning and behavioral expectations. Special programs that are offered include all-day kindergarten, Reading Recovery, a Family Literacy program, TeamMates, Food Bank backpack program, and math and literacy intervention support. Hartley Elementary also benefits from a Community Learning Center, offering numerous academic and enrichment clubs, before and after school care, as well as parent activities.
I invite you to explore the Hartley website to learn about upcoming events. We are very fortunate to have a supportive Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A.), which focuses their efforts on improving programming for the children.
Warmest regards,
Jeff Vercellino
