Coming up this week! {9/2-9/6}

Welcome back for week #4 in Kindergarten! This is such an exciting week! We have so many wonderful things to learn!

Literacy…
We are beginning Unit 1! This unit is titled, “Take a New Step!” This week we will be talking about new friends. Our essential question is “How can we get along with new friends?” We are going to continue practicing the ABC chant each day. We will be learning letter Mm this week. Our high-frequency word this week is the. Our vocabulary words are: friend, problem, escape, grasped, rescue. Our grammar skill for the week is nouns. We are starting our R.E.D. folders this week! Your child will be bringing home a R.E.D. folder every Monday (except this week it’s on Tuesday due to Labor Day). They will do the activities inside the red folder, have a parent initial it and then return it to school on Friday. You can skip Monday’s activities this week or combine it with another day if that works best for you. This will be a great way for your child to practice our literacy skills each week which will make them a better reader!

Math…
This week we will be learning all about showing and practicing numbers 1-10. We are going to continue learning about squares, circles, and rectangles. We will be working with many manipulatives throughout the week. We will be using horizontal and vertical graphs to compare numbers using more and fewer. We will be learning and practicing writing numbers 1, 2, and 3. Your child will be bringing home their math homework folder on Thursday and Friday this week. Thursday is the first official math homework and Friday is a Family Letter. Please be sure to have your child complete their homework and return it the next day.

Writer’s Workshop…
We are going to continue learning all about our Writer’s Workshop routine! We are going to dive deeper into story writing now that we have some routines established and in place. We will be learning about the “Ideas” trait and how to think of an idea to write about, how to plan what to include in our stories, drawing simple items, and how to draw people.

Integrated…
We are starting our Garbology unit this week! We will be learning all about worms, composting, decaying, littering, the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and natural vs. manufactured. We can’t wait to tell you about all of the things we learn!

Star of the Week!
We loved learning all about Sawyer last week! Sawyer’s favorite color is black, his favorite animal is a cheetah, and he wants to be a cop when he grows up. We will not have a Star of the Week this week due to the short week. Our next one will be the week of September 9^th.

Don’t forget!
-No School on Monday, September 2nd.
-MAP Testing is on Wednesday, September 4th
-Library day this week is Thursday!
-R.E.D. Folders are due back on Friday, September 6^th.
