These movies were written, illustrated, and read by Level one ELL students attending Holmes elementary school. They range from first grade to fifth grade. The students are from refugee camps in Thailand and from Mexico. They have been in the United States a short time, most of them less than a year.

The students learned how to read and write in English. They also interacted with technology to publish their stories.

The teacher learned about the Karen culture and a few words in Karen, Karenni and Spanish. She also learned how resilient and brave the immigrant families are and how much they want a better life for their children, including an education in the United States.

During second quarter, we published small moment stories using digital storytelling, giving students the opportunity to have a broader audience listen to stories about their lives.

Students worked with teachers to use technology for publishing. They worked really hard on having a beginning, middle, and end in their story and focused on using exciting words, as well. They all enjoyed writing, creating, and sharing their stories with the class. Our goal for next time is to have students write longer stories with even greater detail!

We hope you enjoy their stories!

Mrs. Lamberson’s Class

In the second grade ELL, students worked hard to perfect their writing skills by writing personal narratives. They have added adjectives to make their stories to make them more interesting. They focused on word choice to make the language in their stories more vivid. They also selected fun leads to give their stories a great start and catch your attention.

Writing is how Digital Stories start. After students revise and edit their work, they are ready to create a movie to share their work. The students really enjoyed illustrating and recording their stories.

It has been gratifying to me to see my students smiles as they see their work on the web. Our students work hard to learn and be successful. The publishing of their stories via the digital stories project gives them the complete feeling of success. They are published authors!

I want to especially thank Laura Bartels for all the help and encouragement as we put these stories together. We could not have done it without her!

During second quarter, the second grade ELL students at Hartley Elementary School worked on adding interesting details, dialogue, and thoughts to their writing. We were excited to give our students the opportunity to publish their writing digitally. Students were engaged with the technology and knowing their stories would be published online gave them a real audience to write for.

We hope you enjoy our stories and can see our progress as writers!

Our Kindergarten students have just begun writing stories with a beginning, middle and end. We wanted to celebrate their achievement by sharing their stories with you. I am a first year teacher at Holmes Elementary. Through this experience I noticed the students not only learned how to write stories with greater detail and practice reading, but the act of reading their own stories also made them aware of their own handwriting and the importance of being able to write legibly. Working with the camera provided them the opportunity to see, hear, and learn from themselves as well as their classmates. I look forward to posting more stories and watching their comfort and skills grow.
