National School Counseling Week 2017 is Feb. 5–9. The week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and the tremendous impact they can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Fredstrom’s School Counselor is Jessica Northup. Mrs. Northup, delivers a comprehensive counseling program to all of our students. She teaches classroom lessons to students, helping them develop skills to manage their feelings, build healthy friendships, improve social relationships and develop their academic and career interests. She also provides individual and group counseling to help students be more successful. Research shows that schools with comprehensive school counseling programs score significantly better on standardized tests, have decreased disruptive behaviors, and students with positive attitudes about school. School Counselors are sometimes referred to as “Guidance Counselors”. However, the term Guidance Counselor has its origins in the 1960’s when a counselor’s role was to guide students into a vocation. Counselors now bear the name “School Counselor” because they are trained to assist students with academic, social, and emotional development. Fredstrom students access support from Mrs. Northup through teacher, parent or self-referral. If you would like to talk to Mrs. Northup about her services, please call Fredstrom today!
