DNA

Week of January 30 – February 3

Objective: I will learn the structure of DNA, and how  it functions in genetic inheritance.

Monday, Jan. 30

Lesson Objective:  I will review my summative exam and reflect upon my study habits and how I prepared for the exam.

Opener:  I will write an honest reflection on how well I prepared for the summative exam.

Closer:  I will write a sentence or two on how I can improve my performance in Biology.

Tuesday, Jan. 31

Lesson Objective:  I will learn about some of the famous experiments that helped discover the role of DNA in heredity.

Opener:  What did Griffith’s experiment show about DNA?

Closer: Explain why Avery’s discovery that DNA stores and transmits genetic information is so important?

Wednesday, Feb. 1

Lesson objective: I will learn what are the chemical components of DNA!

Opener:  Explain “Chargaff’s rule.

Closer: The three parts of a DNA Nucleotide are?

  • H. I. worksheet 12.1
  • Read 12.2
  • Class discussion about:  Structure of DNA
  •                                               Nitrogen bases
  •                                               Covalent bonds
  •                                               Hydrogen bonds
  •                                               Rosalind Franklin’s famous picture
  •                                               Watson and Crick’s role

Thursday, Feb. 2

Lesson Objective:  I will continue to learn about the structure of DNA

Opener:  Explain the role of Franklin’s famous X-ray in forming the idea about the shape of DNA.

Closer:  Why are the strands that make up the DNA molecule described as “Antiparallel”?

Friday, Feb. 3

Lesson Objective:  I will learn how DNA can copy the code of heredity.

Opener: The three letter word “ase” is a latin term that means _______.

Closer:  Explain a major difference between a prokaryotic and an eukaryotic chromosomal replication.

  • H.I. worksheet 12.2
  • Read 12.3
  • Discuss 12.3 (click for link)
  • H.O. worksheet 12.3
  • Prepare for quizstar on Tuesday of next week over all of chapter 12.

Week of February 6 – 10

Objective:  I will understand how DNA contains information about heredity, how it is passed from cell to cell, and it is passed from organism to its offspring.

Monday, Feb. 6.

Lesson Objective:  I will understand all of Ch. 12 and particularly lesson 12.3

Opener:  In a short paragraph I will explain how a telomer saves a chromosomes from loosing information.

Closer:  Why is it important that an eukaryotic chromosome has many “points of origin” during replication?

  • Intervention questions
  • H.O. 12.2 worksheets
  • H.I. 12.3 worksheets
  • Discuss questions from all reviews.
  • Prepare for Quizstar on Tuesday.

Tuesday, Feb. 7

Lesson Objective:  I will demonstrate that I have improved my study skills for Biology and will demonstrate my knowledge of DNA on quizstar.

Opener:  I will ask a question that I have on any of the lessons.

Closer:  I will understand material that I felt insecure with on the quiz, because I looked the answer up or asked for help from the teacher.

  • intervention questions (hand back and take new)
  • QuizStar (click for link)

Wednesday, Feb. 8

Lesson objective:  I will learn what DNA looks like and how much is contained in a plant cell

Opener:  Is DNA a food that can be digested?

Closer:  What are my thoughts about the lab and what it showed me about DNA in cells

  • intervention quiz (hand back and take new)
  • Strawberry lab.

Thursday, Feb. 9

Lesson objective:  I will ask questions about Ch. 12 that I do not yet understand (that were on quizstar or on the intervention quizzes).

Opener: Because most food plants grown today are polyploidy, do you think that a plant will have more/less DNA than a cell found in you.

Closer:  What did the soap do in the experiment yesterday?

  • intervention quiz. (hand back and take new)
  • discuss major areas of difficulty as indicated by the quizstar quiz.

Friday, Feb. 10

Lesson objective: I will demonstrate that I have high understanding of the chapter 12 material.

Opener:  I will have one question that I need to get information on to help me understand.

closer:  I will write a short paragraph on how I did to improve my success level on my biology exams.
