Physical Education Expectations

LINCOLN EAST PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

The Physical Education staff would like to welcome each of you to a lifetime of fitness the Spartan way!  There are many activity choices available within the Spartan curriculum. The courses you choose will enhance components of fitness that are important to your health and a lifetime of fitness.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION STAFF:

Mrs. Fischer, Mr. Gingery, Mrs. Hovorka, Mr. Rutledge and Mrs. Zillig look forward to  working with each of you during the school year.  If you need  to contact a staff member outside of class/school day,  please visit www.ehs.lps.org/ to obtain email addresses.

 

Physical Education procedures:

Physical Education is a participation class. Students will be responsible for and expected to:

  • Attend class daily
  • Participate productively in daily activities
  • Be on time for class and remain in the gymnasium with PE staff until dismissal bell.
    • Students will have 5 five minutes to change before and after class.
  • Dressed appropriately for participation when class begins.
    • For safe participation, a student must dress in a t-shirt, athletic style shorts, socks and athletic shoes.
    • Students not dressed appropriately may not participate, and will not receive physical activity points for the day.
    • Students choosing not to wear appropriate physical activity clothing up to five times will be referred to school administrative team and may face possible removal from class.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADES WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

The criteria will be varied by district course weighting

Physical Activity/Physical Fitness

  • Daily participation, practice, and performance
  • Summative Assessments in health and skill related fitness

Physcial Activity Behavior

Be courteous, respectful and demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. Harassment of any kind is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

  • Be on task
  • Listen and follow verbal/written directions.
  • Interacts with a positive attitude towards self and others.
  • Demonstrates self discipline and control; uses appropriate language

Knowledge

  • May include structured observations, written test, quizzes and verbal responses.

Skill

  • Student performance on rubrics designed for each course

Formative

  • Practice from any of four grading categories

 

ABSENCES

1st Truancy – Teacher conference with student, assign consequences, which may range from time before or  after school with teacher, in- school lunch detention and contact home for each truancy.

2nd Truancy – Teacher conference with student, assign two days of consequences, which may range from time  before or after school with teacher, in- school lunch detention and contact home for each truancy.

3rd Truancy and additional truancies – Behavior Referral to Administrator.

PE Make Up Policy

When students are absent from physical education, he/she will have the opportunity to make up work missed.

  • Absences must be cleared through the attendance office within 48 hours.
  • Students will be allowed two free excused absences per quarter without the need to make up physical activity. Missed physical activity for absences three, four and five should be made up by participating in after school activities:
    • East High weight room will be available Monday-Friday
    • Athletic practices or intramural contests.
    • Community athletic activities approved by the physical education instructor
  • On the sixth absence during a quarter students will need to make up time with instructor.
  • Unexcused absences/truancies will result in a zero for  the day. When a truancy is made up, the student will receive 60% of the points for that day.

TARDY POLICY

Physical Education staff will follow the East High Tardy Policy for QUARTER classes

  • Students must be in designated locker room areas before tardy bell rings.
    • 1st Unexcused Tardy – Teacher conference with student; make a plan and contact home.
    • 2nd and 3rd Unexcused Tardy – Teacher assigned consequence; detention assigned.
    • 4th Unexcused Tardy – Additional contact home;  problem solve with parent and student to resolve tardy issue, teacher assigned consequence.
    • 5th Unexcused Tardy –  Behavioral Referral written and submitted to appropriate administrative team

 

Physical Education staff will follow the East High Tardy Policy for SEMESTER classes

  • Students must be in designated locker room areas before tardy bell rings.
    • 1st – 2nd Unexcused Tardy – Teacher conference with student, make a plan and contact home.
    • 3rd – 5th Unexcused Tardy – Teacher chooses appropriate consequences for student which may range from – time with teacher before, after school, after school detention, in school lunch detention. These will be for each unexcused tardy.
    • 6 or more Unexcused Tardy subsequent unexcused – Behavioral Referral written and submitted to appropriate administrative team leader

ELECTRONICS POLICY

Students will be allowed to use their electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, iPads, tablets, etc.) in the hallways during the following times:  before or after school, the student’s designated lunch period and passing periods.

 Use of electronic devices in class without teacher permission or approved use or using at inappropriate times will result in:

First Offense:  Device is confiscated by teacher and returned to student at end of class period  

Second Offense: Device is confiscated by teacher and returned to student at end of school day.  Parent contact will be made home on second offense.

Third Offense: Device is confiscated by teacher and returned to student at end of school day.  Behavioral Referral written and submitted to appropriate administrative team leader.

Physical Education Department Electronic Expectations in activity spaces

  • Upon arrival to class cell phones must be placed is designated holder in the gym or locked in physical education locker room.
  • Students choosing to bring cell phones into the gym and not follow procedures will have electronic device confiscated.

It is your responsibility to secure all valuables before leaving the locker room.
