Foundation Course:  Fitness For Life

Students will learn what they need to know in order to design a personal fitness program.  This includes: assessing their personal fitness levels and creating a plan for improvement; setting physical activity and fitness goals; participating in a variety of physical activities, including weight training, aerobics, individual and team sports and swimming; using the latest technology, including heart rate monitors, pedometers and computerized fitness assessment programs.

This course is a district prerequisite for freshman taking all other physical education courses.

 

Aquatics: 

Beginning Swimming, Intermediate/Advanced Swimming, Water Games and Lifeguard Training

 

Beginning Swim

Students will acquire knowledge  of  basic swimming and water safety skills.  Recommended for students with little or no swimming experience.

 

Intermediate/Advanced Swimming

Suggested for students who have successfully completed Beginning Swimming or those who have mastered beginning level swim skills or higher.  Students will master intermediate and advanced swimming and water safety skills and knowledge.

 

Water Games

Course content will include variety of recreational and fitness activities in the water.

 

Lifeguard Training

The following are Red Cross prerequisites for Lifeguard Training:

300 yard swim without stopping using freestyle or breaststroke.

Swim from shallow end of pool to deep end of pool; surface dive down to bottom of pool to retrieve brick, swim on back using the breaststroke kick, while holding brick with both hands above water and exiting the pool in 1:40. No goggles allowed

Treading water for 2 minutes with hands under the armpits.

Student must be 15 years of age by end of course.

 

Dance: 

Dance 101, Hip Hop Dance

 

Dance 101

Students will develop skills and knowledge in a variety of dance forms.  Dances may include:  waltz, polka, tango, salsa, stomp, east coast swing,  country swing , line dance.

 

Hip Hop

Students will develop skills and knowledge in hip hop dance.

 

 

Individual Sports: 

 

Lifetime Sports

Opportunities are provided for students to develop skills, knowledge and strategies of lifetime sports.  Participation in these activities can help students maintain or improve health related and skill related fitness.  Activities may include: archery, badminton, billiards, bocce, bowling, cycling, disc golf, golf, pickle ball, table tennis and tennis.

 

Physical  Conditioning and Fitness:

Aerobic Training, Strength and Aerobic Conditioning, Weight Training or Advanced Weight Training

 

Aerobic Training

Students to develop personal fitness goals for cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility.   Cross training activities will include; aerobic dance, step aerobics, kick  boxing, body toning, water aerobics, circuit/surge training, pilates, zumba and fitness equipment training.

 

Strength Conditioning

Opportunities are provided for students to develop strength using multiple training methods 3 days a week, remaining 2 days will concentrate on cardiovascular fitness training using running, swimming, fitness equipment. . . and will give students opportunity to develop individualized personal training practices.

 

Weight Training

Students will develop muscle strength and endurance 4-5 days a week by weight training and remaining days will focus on improving components of skill related fitness through activities and games.   Skill related fitness components include: agility, balance, coordination, power, speed and reaction time) Classroom instruction will include training principles,  proper use of free and selectorized weight equipment,  safety in the weight room and knowledge of the human body.  Students will have the knowledge and be able to develop and design individualized programs.

 

Advanced Weight Training

Opportunity for students with previous weight training experience to improve/maintain muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and body composition.  Students will be exposed and train with various advanced strength and conditioning methods which require self motivation and hard work.

 

Team Sports: 

Officiating Team Sports or Team Sports

 

Officiating Team Sports

Opportunities are provided for students to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to officiate team sports.  Sports may include:  basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, and/or volleyball.

 

Team Sports

Opportunities are provided for students to develop the sport skills, knowledge and strategies of team sports.  Participation in these activities can help students maintain or improve physical fitness.  Sports may include: basketball, eclipse ball, flag football, floor hockey, korfball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, speed-a-way, team handball, ultimate games, and volleyball.
