LINCOLN EAST HIGH SCHOOL HEALTH EXPECTATIONS

Dear Parent or Guardian:

In our nine-week Health Education classes, we will be meeting the LPS Standards with special attention given to the six youth heath risk behaviors.

The LPS HEALTH STANDARDS state that students will:

Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.

Demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and health products and services.

Demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.

Analyze the influence of culture, media, technology and other factors on health.

Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.

Demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision-making sills to enhance health.

Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health.

YOUTH RISK BEHAVIORS include:

Behavior resulting in unintentional and intentional injuries

Tobacco use

Alcohol and other drug use

Sexual behaviors that result in sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV) and pregnancy

Dietary behaviors, which contribute to disease

Physical inactivity

Class materials and discussions will HELP STUDENTS LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR HEALTH CHOICES! Throughout the duration of the quarter-and well beyond- we hope that you will continue to TALK WITH YOUR CHILD about what he or she is LEARNING. Such discussions are most important in helping students form and clarify their goals and values and in building good communication between you and your child.

COURSE CONTENT:

Students will study health information and issues concerning mental health, nutrition alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and comprehensive sexual health.

In the sexual health unit the following topics will be covered: health relationships, abstinence, review of anatomy, birth control, STD’s, and sexual harassment. Speakers from the community will include the Crisis Pregnancy Center and Planned Parenthood..

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Students will study information and formulate ideas related to their own personal health and wellness. Students will be given the opportunity and efforts will be made to examine how the issues in course content are dealt with in other cultures. To meet curriculum and unit objectives, students will listen to guest speakers and will use handouts, lectures, note taking, reading, group work, homework, dvds, and research.

ATTENDANCE:

Students are to be on time each day. A student must be in attendance a minimum of 35 DAYS (no more than 10 excused or unexcused absences) to earn credit for Health class. There is a MAXIMUM OF 5 DAYS UNEXCUSED ABSENCES, more than 5 truancies will result in a failing grade. A student with 10 or more absences will not receive credit for Health class. (Additional work determined by the teacher may be completed for credit in special situations.)

GRADING:

A student’s grade is determined by the total number of points they have earned divided by the total number of points possible for a percentage. Missed work will be made up according to the LPS Attendance Procedures. It is the responsibility of the student to make up work that had been missed because of an absence.

**Students need a writing utensil and paper to write daily.

**Harassment of any kind is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The consequences for unacceptable behavior range from verbal reprimand, written referral, exclusion from class, or suspension from school as set forth by Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment Expectations for Lincoln East High School and Lincoln Public School Policy.

Thank you for the privilege of working with your sons and daughters.

Sincerely Yours,

Pam Hovorka and Jeff Rutledge
