Mathematics Graduation Requirements:  Incoming 9th graders are required to complete 30 credits of mathematics (each year long single period course is 10 credits).  It is recommended however that students take math all four years of high school in order to increase their skill level and prepare for a broader range of educational options after high school.

Since mathematics is a highly structured, sequential subject, students should look closely at their achievement level in previous mathematics courses before selecting new courses.

It is recommended that students achieve a grade of “C” before progressing to the next course.  Students who retake the same course can replace their previous grade.

Students who plan to attend a four-year college are strongly encouraged to complete Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra.  Many colleges (UNL included) also require another year of mathematics beyond Advanced Algebra.

Here is the current East High Mathematics course guide for the 2014-2015 school year

COURSE Title G. Req. PREREQUISITES COMMENTS/RECOMMENDATIONS
Algebra Block Math Math 8 & teacher placement recommendation.  Placement for students who were in math intervention at the end of 8th grade. The first year of Algebra in a block, double period format, to allow for further support and development of topics.2 semesters, double periods, 20 credits.
Algebra Math Math 8 & teacher placement recommendation. First-year Algebra course covering expressions and equations.  2 semesters, 10 credits.
Geometry Math  20 credit hours of Algebra Block or 10 credit hours of Algebra Covers formal proofs and a study of 2 and 3 dimensional figures.  Essential for most colleges and vocational programs.  2 semesters, 10 credits.
Geometry Plus 1-2 Math Algebra Block (20 credit hrs) or Algebra (10 credit hrs) or teacher placement recommendation. For sophomores and juniors.  The first year of a two-year course covering the curriculum of regular Geometry.  Provides additional time, support, and practice with topics.  2 semesters, 10 credits.
Geometry Plus 3 Math Geometry Plus 1-2 or teacher recommendation. The 3rd semester of the Geometry Plus course.  1 semester, 5 credits.
Elements of Advanced Algebra(Follows Geo Plus 3) Math Geometry Plus 1,2 and 3 or teacher recommendation. Follows the 3 semesters of Geo. Plus.  Elements of Advanced Algebra reviews critical first-year algebra skills and topics from probability and statistics that prepare students for success in Advanced Algebra as well as college entrance examinations. 1 semester, 5 credits.
