Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

It was wonderful meeting so many of you at the open house on August 8!  I was able to reconnect with many families, and meet many of you for the first time.  It is always such a fun evening!  I love the enthusiasm as students find their lockers, see their friends, explore the building, and meet their teachers. If you were not able to make it to open house, don’t worry.  We are here to help and make your child’s first day at Scott Middle School a good one!  See you on Monday, August 12!

May 13 – 17

This was a big week for testing!  Students were all able to complete the unit 6, week 6 tests for grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and write their text dependent analysis.  Great job sixth graders!

On Monday, students found out their Quiz Bowl teams.  It has been fun to see the teams work so cooperatively as they study together!  The Quiz Bowl competition begins on Monday afternoon.

The library is still missing a lot of books, and so am I.  Please check at home to see if you have any books that might belong to either our library or me.  We would love to have them returned!

We start our rocket building project on Monday.  We are still looking for some 2 liter bottles.  If you have an empty bottle, we would love to make it into a rocket!  Rocket launching will be on Wednesday.

Students checked in their Chromebooks today.  They will be issued the same Chromebook when they return in August.

Just a reminder, students are not to bring their backpacks the last two days of school.  They can continue to use their lockers for phones, lunches, or jackets, but everything else will be taken home either Monday or Tuesday when students clean out their lockers.

May 6 – 10

Almost all of the students were able to complete their May writing project.  Hopefully, they will be sharing their writing with you soon.  We also had a special writing celebration on Thursday.  Students that have been part of Lincoln Public School were given their writing folders with a collection of writing from kindergarten through fifth grade.  There were a lot of laughs as students shared their stories and illustrations.  It was fun for the students to see their growth and creativity!

Our last literature group of the year met on Thursday, but I encourage students to continue reading.  This is a wonderful opportunity to choose new books or revisit some of your favorites.  Two librarians from the public library came to visit Scott Middle School on Wednesday to let us know about their summer reading program.  Check out their webpage to sign up!  The public library is also looking for volunteers to help with the elementary reading program.

Next week will the unit 6, week 6, testing.  Students will take a reading comprehension test, a grammar test, a vocabulary test, and write a Text Dependent Analysis(TDA).

Tuesday,, May 14,  Scott Middle School will be lucky to have a local author, Phillipa Stusiuk, visit our school! Ms. Stusiuk describes herself as a writer, rover, animal and plant lover, Philippa has lived in Zimbabwe (where she’s from), South Africa, South Korea, Mexico, New York, and Copenhagen, Denmark. She grew up with Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Bichon Frises, Dachshunds, and mutts. She now lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with her husband, two daughters, and two cats. The Wonderful Whippet of Winifred Weatherwax is her first novel.

May 17, students will check in their Chromebooks for the summer.  Please make sure to bring all the parts including the strap for the case and the charger.  Each student will be issued the same computer in the fall when we return to school.

We all know summer is right around the corner, but finish strong!  There is still work to be done!

April 29 – May 3

The students continue to work hard on their May Writing Project.  The due date for this project is May 10.  I have been impressed by the writing ability of this group of students and their creativity!

Literature groups will meet for the last time on May 9.  If students have not completed their book at that time, they can keep the book until May 17.  All literature books should be returned to me by May 17.

Unit 6, week 6 testing will begin on May 13.  During that week students will take two reading comprehension tests, a vocabulary  test, a grammar test, and write a text dependent analysis (TDA).  It is important to finish the semester strong!

April 22 – 26

The students completed oral presentations for their persuasive essays this week. The presentations were quite impressive!  It was obvious that students chose topics they were passionate about and had practiced!  Great job sixth graders!

Our last writing project of the year is a bit of a secret.  Don’t be surprised if your child is not giving you much information at this point.  Students are working hard and everyone should be finished with this May writing assignment by May 10.

The students are enjoying choosing their own books for literature groups.  Literature groups will continue to meet until May 9, our last literature group meeting of the year.  Students should come with their book and be ready to discuss their book with the group.  Each student has been given three bookmarks to mark specific pages to discuss with their group.

For an end of the year project, we will be building rockets.  If you would be able to donate empty 2 liter bottles for the project, it would be greatly appreciated.

April 15-18

Persuasive Essays are looking great!  Many of the students finished them today and were able to print.  If the essay was not finished today, it is due on Monday.  If any students want me to look over their essay during the weekend, they can submit it on Google Classroom, and I will make suggestions.  Oral presentations are next week, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  All students have signed up for the day they will present.  The essay and the oral presentation are each worth 100 points as a summative grade.

Literature groups will continue until the end of the year, but the students are no longer required to write in their literature journal.  The students have three bookmarks they will use to indicate places they want to discuss with their group.  Literature groups meet every Thursday.

Enjoy your three day weekend!

Fourth Quarter Service Project

This week our 6B students competed in a Penny War to help raise money for the Backpack Program.  Congratulations to all, for raising $1,195.48.  This is enough to feed five families for an entire school year!  Great job; we thank you all for your support!

April 8 – 12

Students have been working hard on their persuasive essay.  We spent time brainstorming possible topics, and all students  have chosen their topics.  Students have had lessons on writing the introduction, writing the first body paragraph, and looked at a model paper. The model paper is on Google Classroom, so if you need to refer it it, the paper is there for you. The final copy of the persuasive essay is due April 22.

This week we are on Unit 6, Week 1.  We don’t have tests on weeks 1, 3, or 5.  Next week, week 2, our weekly test will be on Thursday since we don’t have school on Friday.

Literature groups continue to meet on Thursday.  Students should have completed their reading and have written three entries in their literature journal to major events in their reading.  Students have chosen their literature books, so there are many different books being read in the classroom!  “So many books to read, not enough time!” Quote by Frank Zappa.

April 1 – 5

Since we had just taken the NSCAR, the Unit 5, Week 6, testing was minimal.  Students took the grammar and vocabulary tests, and then spent the rest of the week completing their realistic fiction stories and their shoe box literature project.  The writing lessons for the week were transitions, endings, titles, revising, and requirements.  Specific instructions are on Google Classroom.  Both projects will be due April 8.

Next week for writing we will begin our persuasive essay.  The oral presentations for this essay will be April 23-26.  In reading we will begin unit 6, week 1.

Literature groups will meet on Thursday.  Students should read and have their three entries from their literature journal with them for group.

My daffodils are about ready to bloom!  Yay, Spring!

March 25 – 29

This week students took the NSCAR, the state test for Language Arts.  Both Wednesday and Thursday were testing days, and I was impressed with the students’ perseverance!  Students took their time and worked hard!  Great job students!

Next week is week 6 of unit 5, which is normally a big testing week.  Since we took the state tests this week, there will only be two tests next week.  We will take both the grammar and vocabulary tests on Monday.  The grammar test will be on the comparative and superlative form of adjectives.  The vocabulary words are from unit 5.

Next week will be the last week to work on realistic fiction.  This week the lessons were characters, grabber beginnings, punctuating dialogue, and writing believable dialogue.  Next week the lessons will be transitions, endings, titles, revising, and revisiting the requirements.  The realistic fiction stories are due April 8.

We started a shoebox book project today.  The requirements are on Google Classroom.  The students were excited and worked well on them today in class.  I currently have the due day as April 8, but we will revisit that at the end of next week to see if that time is adequate.

Doesn’t a warm, dry weekend sound wonderful?  Maybe next week!
