We’re in Year 2 … Device Assisted Learning and Instruction at Culler Middle School!

As previously reported, Culler Middle School was selected as a pilot site for the “Device Assisted Learning and Instruction,” or DALI initiative. DALI focuses on three major areas:

  • Digital curriculum implementation
  • Increased student access to mobile devices
  • Connected Learning Environments

Digital Curriculum – GO Math!

As a part of the regular review and update of curriculum, a committee of teachers, administrators, and district staff selected the GO Math! curriculum from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. What makes this curriculum unique is that it is delivered completely digitally and can be accessed through the Internet. Culler Math teachers received extensive training on the curriculum during the summer and are excited to engage students with the content and resources it provides.

LPS supports the implementation of digital curriculum and systems for learning by ensuring teachers, students, staff and administrators have persistent access to a computing device sufficient to access and leverage these resources.

Connected Learning Environments

During the summer, upgrades to the technology infrastructure here at Culler laid the groundwork for classroom technology updates that will transform them into Connected Learning Environments. Beginning in the fall and continuing throughout the school year components of a Connected Learning Environment (new display technology, multi-function “Teaching Tablets,” document camera stands, wireless projection capability, audio enhancement, etc.) will be installed and used by teachers.

Using the LPS Chromebook at Home

BruceLPS Chromebooks are able to connect to the Internet from wireless networks (Wi-Fi) at home or in public.To access the internet from a non-LPS network, the Chromebook must firstauthenticate to our filter. If the device does not authenticate to our filter it will run in “Offline Mode” and apps may not behave as expected. Steps #3–4 under Connect to Wi-Fi are required every time you connect from home.

If you do not have access to the internet, you can still access many of the resources necessary to complete schoolwork, like Google Drive and it’s productivity tools and many digital curriculum resources. See the Working While Offline section for more information.

Connect to Wi-Fi (away from LPS)

The wireless network you connect to must be open (no password) or one that you know how to connect to with a password. The connection is routed through the LPS filter to ensure that student access to the Internet adheres to district policy.

Students should use these steps to establish an Internet connection outside of the LPS network for the first time.

  1. Login to your Chromebook.
  2. Connect your Chromebook to wi-fi by clicking the icon ChromebookNOwifi in the bottom right corner of your screen and selecting the network you wish to join. (Follow these steps if you need additional assistance.)
  3. Launch the Chrome browser Chrome_400 in the bottom left corner of the screen. (close any open windows before doing this)
  4. The LPS filter will load as a blue web page that says “Mobile Login.” Enter your LPS-assigned student ID and password to authenticate for away-from-LPS internet access to important instructional content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What device will my child be receiving?
A: Students will be issued a ChromeBook.

Q: What is my financial responsibility if the devise is lost, damaged, or stolen?
A: Please refer to the Responsible Use Agreement.

Q: How can I monitor my child’s device use at home?
A: Best way to monitor the use of your child’s device at home is to continue to play an active role in their education by asking questions of what curriculum they are working on with the device, what sites are they accessing, and how are they enjoying using a digital device in their classrooms.

Q: What level of access will my child have to the Internet while the device is off campus?
A: The expectation is that this is an LPS device and students will use the device for educational purposes. As such, it will be subject to the same LPS filter off campus as it in on campus.

Q: What if my child forgets their device at home?
A: Students will be able to use a temporary device for their school day. If possible, please bring it to school for them.

Q: What if the device isn’t working properly?
A: Have your child make come to the library to check-out a loaner computer after she/he has written a ticket for our technicians at ‘stuhelp’ from lps.org

Q: Will CLC staff be able to support my child with this new technology?
A: To assist students during CLC time, staff will be trained and students will be allowed to use them during CLC time.

Q: What would you recommend as safe practices for using the device at home?
A: As a starting point, we recommend encouraging your student

  • use the case they were issued to transport the device,
  • keep the charger at home in the same place when not being used,
  • keep the device in the case while on the bus, and
  • make sure to not have anything heavy or anything like food or drinks near the device.
