Culler Middle School is a professional learning community with a tradition of service, a culture of collaboration, and a commitment to student learning.

What is GoMath?

GoMath is the new digital curriculum being used at Culler this year. This curriculum truly emphasizes deep understanding of mathematical ideas with less emphasis on arithmetic drills and more emphasis on how to solve problems. Each unit is framed by an essential question that sets the stage for the learning. The unit is broken down into modules which each address elements of the essential question.

How does my child get to the online textbook?

The online textbook can be reached by typing “my.hrw.com” into a Chrome browser bar. The online book offers students video lessons by clicking on “Math On the Spot”. The “Personal Math Trainer” (PMT) will allow students to practice some problems. If a student needs help, they can click on “view example” or “step by step” and read through and process the information. Then the PMT will give them a similar problem to try.

How does my child get to the offline textbook?

Every device has the GoMath textbook loaded in the memory. Go to the Chrome Browser and type “c:/hmh”. The directory will be shown for each GoMath book. There are also video lessons for each module

I am concerned about my child’s grade in math. What opportunities are there for grade improvement?

This year throughout the whole district, grades are based on summative assessments (tests) and formative assessments (independent practice/homework). Summative assignments count for 80% of the final grade so formative assignments count for 20%. If homework is not being turned in consistently, this will be reflected in the final grade.

After a Unit Test has been given, teachers will analyze what areas of the test students struggled with. Teachers will then determine what re-teaching should be done in class. After the re-teaching has been completed, all students will take a Retention Test. The Retention Test serves two purposes:

  1. To allow students to improve the scores on a prior unit test. If a

student scores higher on the Retention Test than on the unit test, the low score will be replaced. If a student scores lower on the Retention test, the grades will not be replaced.

  1. To help students remember prior learning after the point of

instruction.

Teachers will identify some students who need more re-learning support than can be offered in class. There is a Fluid Intervention class that would focus on learning a skill for 1 week. Students would go to Fluid Math 6th period.

If I have questions, who should I contact?

Start with your child’s math teacher. They would be able to help with any questions related to grades or book access.
