Roads, Rails and Race Cars
Roads, Rails and Race Cars is in its third year at Culler Middle School! We were happy to be the first site in Lincoln and are now the pilot program for other Community Learning Center Clubs in Lincoln, Omaha, Iowa and Wisconsin.
The Club introduces students to:
- Basic principles of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
- Career Information about Transportation fields
- Interactive games, modeling activities and demonstrations
The real purpose of the Club is for students to construct a solid education and also work with someone who builds hope for their future.
Our Curriculum topics this semester include:
- Green technology for transportation
- Safety first on the Roads
- Introductions to Careers in Transportation and Engineering
- Setting Goals for your Future Education and College
Please encourage your student to come to Roads, Rails and Race Cars on Mondays or Wednesdays and see what the excitement is all about!
Research shows that engaging students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning outside the regular classroom has a profound impact on shaping students’ attitudes toward STEM subjects and their future career goals. With funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Mid-America Transportation Center piloted an innovative transportation engineering after-school club for middle school students in Lincoln, Nebraska. At Culler by Mary Herrington, Science Teacher and two MATC graduate students in conjunction with the Community Learning Center, students learn about engineering and transportation through hands-on activities that encourage student inquiry. At the end of each quarter, students prepare presentations and activities to demonstrate the most memorable concepts to parents and school administrators at a culminating celebration. In the summer of 2011, MATC also facilitated “Roads, Rails and Race Cars” activities with summer school students.
