Spelling lists will be sent home each Friday in Friday folders. Spelling tests will be given the following Thursday. Tests will cover 15 words that go along with the phonics skills we are learning in class. We will briefly practice spelling words during the week, but most spelling practice should occur at home.
Our phonics lessons are taught daily. Our spelling program is part of our McGraw- Hill Wonders Reading Program. There is an on level and above level list. Children will be flexible each week.
Please have your child study their lists every night (Friday- Wednesday). Children can practice their words in a variety of ways. They can write them in pencil, marker or crayon. They can practice them outside with sidewalk chalk. They can also use their words in sentences or stories. It is important that they practice- and it can be fun!
We will test over the words on Thursday mornings. I will then give a Pre Test of the next weeks words and send home a new list in Friday Folders. It is important that we study these words so that students can write them correctly whenever they are used. We also want them to be able to apply the rules learned to other words that follow those rules in both writing and reading.
