Writing Skills seen in First Grade

  1. Use of correct beginning sound
  2. Use of correct ending sound
  3. Use of correct middle sound
  4. Sounds in words placed in the correct order
  5. Uses mostly lower case letters in words
  6. Leaves space between words
  7. More and more sight words are spelled correctly

The students will be writing small moment stories throughout the year.  The stories need to include details with a beginning, middle and end.  Students will be encouraged to use a lead and a satisfying ending.  These stories should be five pages in length.  Adding details is a main focus. Editing and revision skills are taught.  The children will be writing independently for approximately 25 minutes a day.

An All About Book, a research paper and poetry are additional units of study second semester.
