First grade features a developmentally appropriate curriculum that promotes a strong academic foundation, fosters age appropriate social skills, emotional growth, confidence in self, and community awareness. Our first grade program is an integral part of the Clinton Elementary School learning community. Our approach to education is child-centered, family focused, and culturally sensitive. Our goal is to provide educational opportunities that empower children to become life-long learners, critical thinkers and successful participants in our changing world. Also, during this time children change both emotionally and socially. In general, students become less dependent on family support systems and begin to grow into their own little persons. Clinton Elementary First Grade provides the opportunity for a child to build on the skill sets learned in kindergarten. Our curriculum includes:

First Grade Students Learn To:

• Understand number Concepts (counting, reading, writing, and comparing numbers).
• Solve addition and subtraction problems.
• Read, write, and solve addition and subtraction sentences.
• Identify, describe, and compare attributes of shapes.
• Recognize, identify and create patterns and lines of symmetry.
• Tell time, count coins, take measurements of lengths, temperature, and graphing.
• Use consonant sounds to decode and spell words
• Write for a variety of purposes independently or in response to a writing prompt.
• Write to communicate, reflect, and learn.
• Develop a strong vocabulary set
• Recognize and spell sight words (Whole Language) in reading passages.
• Participate in daily structured group reading exercises where they learn to identify unknown words.
• Understand nature, our local and global community, food facts, body basics and safety.
• Use important social skills including following directions, impulse control, following daily academic routines, and appropriate peer interaction.
