Expectations of Behavior & Study Skills

Expectations are important for various reasons.  One of the most important reasons for expectations is to prepare them for their next journey:  Middle School.

In Class– Students are evaluated on the following Work Study Skills

  • Listens
  • Follows Oral and Written Directions the first time
  • Is on task
  • Participates in Class
  • Strives for Quality Work
  • Seeks Help when Necessary
  • Completes Assignments on Time

Homework

Yes, there is homework for fifth grade students.  We would like your child to set aside approximately 30 minutes of study time each night.  Your child should bring home a daily planner each night explaining any possible homework for the evening.  If they happen to forget, you may check with a study buddy.  Math is one area that should be sent home on a nightly basis.  Spelling is also a nightly skill that needs to be reviewed.

It is important for students to learn how to take responsibility for turning work on time.  If they miss class, it is THEIR responsibility to find out what they missed.  If a student is in band/orchestra they will need to contact the teacher or study buddy to find out what assignments they need to complete for the next day.  If a student is absent, the same procedure is followed, but they will have three days to complete the school work.  This is NOT the parents’ responsibility.  Students will be informed of missing work on a daily and weekly basis.  The daily planner should be signed by parents each night.  Highlighted or marked areas indicate homework.

We will inform parents of missing assignments if requested through e-mail, phone call, or through the daily planner.  If you wish for an update, please allow a couple of days for us to get it sent to you.

Character Development –  This will be changing this year as we will introduce a new Character Development Program called Step-Up.  The Report Card will change  to match this program.  More information on this program is under curriculum.  Character is critical in becoming successful in everyday life and in the future.  We will work on development of these skills.  Students are graded on the following:

Selects & Uses Age Appropriate Behavior

  • Follows classroom rules without prompting from teacher
  • Independently monitors own behavior
  • Takes responsibility for own actions

Selects and Uses Age Appropriate Coping Skills

  • Is persistent, knows when to ask for assistance
  • Independently uses decision making skills to make choices
  • Is organized, completes quality work on time without teacher assistance

  • Is willing to try new tasks
  • Is able to clearly state feelings and ideas without prompting

Grading – Students are frequently evaluated using district standards and rubrics.  Rubrics are a list of skills determined to meet a certain category.  At times a Grading Scale is used.  If a percent is given the grades are as follows:

  • 90 – 100% = 4
  • 70 – 89%   = 3
  • 60 – 69%    = 2
  • 0   – 59%    = 1
