What is Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBiS)?

PBiS is a school-wide approach that emphasizes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create a positive school environment.

Why Positive Behavior Intervention Support?

Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student’s educational experience.  Teaching behavioral expectations and then reinforcing students for following them is a more positive approach than only responding to misbehavior.  The purpose of school-wide PBiS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.

What PBiS Looks Like At Bryan Community Focus Program

Bryan Bucks:

Students are reinforced for good behavior through the use of Bryan Bucks.  The Bucks can be used at our school store to purchase items such as food, school supplies, gift certificates or other Bryan incentives.

Learning Lab/Advisory:

Small groups of students are assigned to each teacher at Bryan and meet daily in order to provide an opportunity for teaching our expectations, recognizing positive events at school, and relationship building.  A specific focus is placed on the Bryan Guiding Principles, Goal Setting, and Self-Reflection.

Data:

An important piece of PBiS is data-based decision making.  At Bryan, we keep track of disciplinary actions in a Student Assistance Team Folder on Docushare.  Data regarding all students is reviewed regularly.  Our PBiS committee will evaluate data and focus on areas of our building, times of day, days of the week, or other issues that appear difficult for students.

PBiS Steps of Accountability

The following steps may be taken to help students learn the expectations at Bryan:

Make A Plan (MAP):

A MAP is a problem solving form used by students when they are asked to leave class due to inappropriate behaviors.  This form is completed in the Bryan office with an administrator.  Once the student has made a plan with an administrator on how he/she can demonstrate positive behaviors at school, the student can return to class to process with the classroom teacher.

Team Meeting:

A team meeting may be called with a student, parent, homeroom teacher and classroom teacher to problem solve situations as they arise.

If additional support is needed, teachers will consult with Bryan administrators.

Bryan Community Focus Program staff believes that PBiS can help all students develop important social and learning skills.  We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning.  Bryan staff has established several clear guidelines for the behavior we expect in all areas of our school.  We will explicitly teach those expectations to the students and reinforce them frequently through the use of their Bryan Bucks and other incentives.  We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow.
