LPS Visual Art Curriculum Information

The goals of the LPS visual art program are supporting student learning through Big Ideas and essential questions to develop critical thinking skills. Asking students to think at high levels through the artistic processes of:

Creating Art to Generate Ideas:

Students will use the creative process to make works of art with a variety of materials. Students will plan and select materials, use imagination and explore their artistic voice, have aesthetic experiences, apply the Elements and Principles of Design, and develop perseverance and craftsmanship.

Presenting  ideas to communicate ideas, process and product:

Students will develop presentation skills to understand purpose of art to communicate meaning. Understanding artistic intent, selection process and presentation venues

Responding to understand and appreciate:

Students will use the critical process to examine works of art, learning about themselves and cultures. Developing skills in describing, analyzing, interpreting and evaluating

Connecting individual perspective and identity through the study of art:

Students will study the artist identity and their influence on the human experience, how humans have created art over time and in different places, plus explore and explain the purpose and function of a variety of art. Students will examine contemporary, historical, and cultural context in art and life.

Creative Process:

By the end of 5th grade students will have opportunities to demonstrate:

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:

  • Solve problems in both conventional and innovative ways
  • Use reasoning skills
  • Interpret information and draw conclusions based on best analysis
  • Reflect critically on learning experiences and processes
  • Synthesize and make connections between information

Creativity and Innovation:

  • Demonstrate originality and inventiveness in work
  • Understand that creativity and innovation is a long term cyclical process of small successes and frequent mistakes
  • Elaborate, refine and evaluate ideas to improve and maximize creativity

Communication:

  • Look and listen carefully to decipher meaning including knowledge and intentions
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively and respectfully with others
  • Exercise flexibility and willingness to accomplish a common goal

Visual Literacy:

  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret, recognize, appreciate, and understand information presented

Cross-Disciplinary Thinking:

  • Apply knowledge and skills across disciplines in appropriate and effective ways (Big Ideas)
