Artsonia and ePortfolios

Artsonia is the world’s largest kids’ art museum – a special online art gallery, reflecting their masterpieces created at Maxey Elementary School.  My goal with this website is to use it as a tool to communicate to families but also as a tool to start conversations.  Check out the Maxey Artsonia gallery:

What can my child and I do on Artsonia?  Students will have a photo of their artwork uploaded to their account.  The photos of their art will go to the child’s own Artsonia gallery!!  You can start a fan club and invite family and friends to view the grand opening of the gallery and join your child’s official Artsonia Fan Club.  Friends and family can leave positive comments about your child’s artwork in their guestbook.  View this Artsonia video to learn more:

A permission slip was sent home in your child’s Wednesday folder in October.  If the permission slip got lost or didn’t make it home, please let Mrs. Hergott know and we can help you out.  If interested in joining Artsonia, follow the directions on this permission slip to sign up your child for their own Artsonia gallery.  With questions – please call Mrs. Hergott at 436-1153 or email at

In addition, 2nd – 5th grade students will be learning how to use ePortfolios.  Think of these as student owned websites that they learn to create with their teachers on their Chromebooks.  It is a place for students to document their learning.  ePortfolios is student driven with the idea that the student learns to take charge of presenting their own work.  A student would need to initiate showing their ePortfolio to you at home (by logging into their LPS Google account) or during PT Conferences.  The public (parents included) do not have viewing access of the ePortfolio.  Again, it would be the student that would need to log in and initiate presenting their portfolio.  Artsonia is PTO/teacher/parent driven where parents have access and control with the PTO and art teacher.  ePortfolio is student driven with the student in charge.  As stated from the LPS Visual Art Education website:

LPS ePortfolios provide students with a way to catalogue and present evidence of learning across grade levels and curriculum areas.

Why ePortfolios?

  • They provide a window into student learning over time, allowing students to think critically and reflect upon their work
  • They make classroom learning more accessible to students, parents, teachers and administrators
  • They increase student engagement, promote a continuing conversation about learning between teachers, parents, and students, and extend academic lessons beyond school walls
  • Digital portfolios also offer opportunity for students to showcase skills and kinds of intelligence that often are not measured on standardized tests.

Welcome back to another wonderful school year!!!  I look forward to meeting everyone tonight at Maxey’s Open House from 6 – 7 PM.

If you are not able to make it, I will be sending out information about the NEW LPS Visual Art Standards through the school newsletter and the Artsonia Newsletter.

Here’s to a GREAT school year!!

Banner Club

What is Banner Club?  Each year, each elementary school in the LPS district creates a banner that is displayed in the downtown Wells Fargo Bank during Youth Art Month (March).  The banner then travels throughout Lincoln for the next year.  After the banner is done traveling, it returns to Maxey to be displayed in the halls.

Who is Banner Club open to?  Banner Club is open to 5th grade students.

When is Banner Club?  Banner Club begins at 8:15 AM and students are dismissed when school begins.  We will meet in the art room on Wednesdays starting Sept 18.

Students will be split into 3 or 4 groups.  The number of groups may change – this is determined by how many students sign up and return a Parent Permission Slip by September 3.  The schedule will be made after the final list of Banner Club students are finalized and will be advertised in the Maxey Messenger and on this website.

Please call (436 – 1153) or email me ( with questions.
